Going to a gig at Cambridge Junction. Looking at an off-peak day return for £23.70 as will most likely end up getting the last train back which is the 23.15 FCC. Any splits or ways to reduce this a little? I could risk booking two advance singles as there's a £6 advance currently available on the 22.51 Greater Anglia but this would obviously mean leaving by 22.35 (22.40 at a stretch) and possibly missing the end of the gig.

If you don't mind being stuck to First Capital Connect trains only, there's a Daysave ticket for £18 available (assuming you can get hold of one) that would allow you to get the 23.15 back to KX.

There aren't any split opportunities on this route as far as I'm aware; I made this journey last year.

The cheapest advance I can see (L - CBG) is £14 on the 16.43 so together with £6 for the advance coming back it's up to you whether you want to save £3 or so off the off-peak return price by being stuck to specific trains.

Maybe another member knows of a more cost-effective way.

I stand corrected

With regards to Advance tickets heading to Cambridge, there are a few cheap ones at £6/8 leaving at 14.28 and 14.58 arriving around 4pm but that's no use if you have work or the like.

There are cheap coach journeys available from £5 if you don't mind spending 2 hours on the road.

Spotted an off-peak day return route any permitted from East Croydon for £27. This would save me a bit as it eliminates the additional cost of getting from Croydon to Liverpool Street/Kings X (I can walk in and out of Croydon). If I get the FCC back I can just go round to St Panc but if I did mange to catch the earlier GA to Liverpool Street (arriving 00:18) I'm assuming this ticket would be valid for either a tube round to the cross, or a brisk walk from Liverpool Street to London Bridge where I could resume the journey on the 00:42 FCC?

All went smoothly. Show finished 22:35 so managed to catch the earlier GA train to Liverpool Street then took the brisk walk to London Bridge option and picked up the train to Croydon there.
