London bus driver strike over pay?

If Labour win the next mayoral election the pressure will be ramped up and is likely to secure some extra conditions in contracts I would have thought. One basic hourly rate for all drivers though would be resisted by not only those drivers with 'seniority' but by Inner London garages cpmparing their driving day to those at some outer London sheds. I can imagine a driver at Brixton or Bow not being happy that a driver at Orpington or Potters Bar should receive the same basic pay, and tensions within individual companies (e.g. Brixton v Croydon or Bow v Romford.) No doubt I will be told I am wrong and all is blissful harmony among the brother/sisterhood!

In London Transport post-GLC takeover days, office staff (management) got a basic salary plus either Inner or Outer London weighting. I seem to remember my (Inner) London weighting in 1970 was the princely sum of £144 p.a.! Inner London was then the old London County Council area, so if you worked at Abbey Wood you'd have got Inner pay, in Ilford or Ealing Outer pay.

Well, there's a number of different grades, but each grade will get roughly the same, except that pay rises may have varied depending on performance.

But apart from pay, they're all on the same terms and conditions.

Almost all tube drivers will negotiate lines in central, inner and outer London during the course of a working day and, in any case, you couldn't say line conditions were worse in any given part of London to any other! Station platforms in central London are more likely to be crowded for the majority of the day, and the amount of time spent in tunnels may vary, with the Bakerloo, Norhern and Circle probably worst for that factor. But whether you sign on at Morden, Upminster or Elephant shouldn't make any difference. If you drive a bus from Orpington or Bromley though you are unlikely to get nearer to central London than Lewisham or Crystal Palace.

There are a number of lines that are ATO. They could have paid those drivers differently but yet no - all tube ops are paid the same.

What I want to know is what Unite feel the actual salary for a bus driver should be. 50k I suspect.
