Prior to the major remodelling of Blackfriars were the then Tate Modern side bays accessible from London Bridge

The current bays are not. A train terminating has to skip London Bridge and crawl around Streatham/Crystal/Clapham between East Croydon and Blackfriars

Seems a bit nonsensical

I imagine they were, but I don't recall any normal services that terminated at Blackfriars from London Bridge.

It was never planned to have Thameslink services via London Bridge terminating at Blackfriars, the west side bays were designed for the original idea of Wimbledon Loop services not being through services (they may not have even been Thameslink at all, but transferred to SN).

They were, of course, being on the downstream side of the bridge, and indeed ISTR the Carriage Road provided an independent line.

However, the station throat was considerably further north.
Looking on Googlemaps, the new layout means that Bays towards London Bridge would require some complex pointwork which neither NR nor operators like.
