I sit at the back of the Peckham Rye service arriving 0826 (because it's quieter and staff often ask people to move towards the rear of the train).

It takes me 60 seconds to walk from the barriers to the front of the train in the evening peak and about 4-5 minutes to get off the platform during the morning peak.

It's a very slow shuffle with some periods of stopping, not a slow walk.

Well that's not my experience, but then it does vary by train.

Besides, it is approx 250 metres from the barrier line to the front of an 8 car train on platform 15; fair play if you can do that in 60 seconds.

Taking this morning, I got off at 0825 and was reaching the barriers at 0829.

It does feel crowded and unsafe on platform 15 in the mornings, passengers regularly get back on the train and try to jump the "queue" by walking down the carriages, and you have to remember we're passengers - we have no idea what a crowd control measure is are or where the emergency exits are.

Admittedly I'm a fast walker so 60 seconds to the front of the train is probably extreme, but safe to say it takes at least twice as long in the morning peak to exit the station.

60 seconds for 250m puts you in sub 2h50 marathon pace, so don't expect anyone to keep up!

Anyway, back on topic.

The viaduct that carried platforms 5&6 and the up loop at the station was demolished yesterday.

Yesterday, as I passed, I could see a lot of viaduct/bridge has been removed to the East of London Bridge (probably site of the dive under). Looks to affect a pair of Southern tracks and a pair of South Eastern tracks.

It's being discussed in this newly developing thread Peter: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=115291

Thanks for the pointer. I see I am not the first to notice progress around the Bermondsey dive under !.

I had to travel from East Croydon to Strood so got a comprehensive view from both sides of the workings. Plus the all too familiar confusion at London Bridge - was tempted to go via Clapham Jct and Waterloo but chickened out incase a Strood train started from Cannon Street !. The obvious place seems to be to get to Lewisham and then figure out a North Kent line train (potentially by bus from Croydon).

From Croydon to Chatham I normally take Tramlink to Beckenham Junction and train from there changing at Bromley South

Ah well. I should explain. I wanted to fly past Hoo Junction. Incidentally a place I used to visit by bike from Strood in the second half of the 1970s to get a fix of 33s !. Otherwise I would currently go on the 119 bus from near my place of eating and sleeping to Bromley South and then get a taxi/lift from Meopham to somewhere West of Strood station. Sole Street used to be my commuting station in the 1980s but the service is so much better nowadays from Meopham.

#behindthehoardings the demolition of @NetworkRailLBG platforms 5 & 6 has created a huge space for the new concourse.

That's an impressive picture. But the gap looks a lot wider than I remember platforms 5 and 6 being! Did there use to be other platforms too above that space?

The entire space opened up at the moment includes the area under the old P5, P6, the up loop line, and also under about three of the low level platforms.

The aerial view in post 554 above is a few weeks older, the P5/6 Island is still to be removed in that shot, but it shows well the massive space already revealed under the low level area.

The new track for the new platforms 5,6,7,8,9 are going above the gap
The piling rig is working on the foundations for one of the pillars for the new track 5&6. The pic looks like it was taken from the new deck on track 7.

Picture here taken from up the Shard in mid-June shows the west end of the Charing Cross platforms taking shape - as points of reference you can see the future emergency escape stairs for the P6/7 island in white, just left of the yellow mobile crane; and the shuttering to form the same stairs for the P8/9 island just down and to the left.

London Bridge Station redevelopment from Oblix @ The Shard (15.6.2015) by The Shard Baby 2006-2015, on Flickr

Recommend going to the original on flickr and viewing the huge original...

Hope this is of interest, we don't see many views of the west end of the through station since the hoardings went up, unfortunately.

A year? 3 of those tracks have to be ready before Christmas! (7,8,9)
And the complexities of a construction project fixed around the points the year when the work can be blitzed, and those SE blockades yet to be. Any info on the plans for the work during the Aug BH shutdown?

And I'm looking forward to the British Transport Films - Operation London Bridge MK II which I hope is in the can somewhere :)

Does anyone know what's going to be done at London Bridge over the bank holiday weekend, 29-31 August? This webpage states:

SouthEastern said:
Throughout the weekend London Charing Cross, London Cannon Street and Waterloo East stations will be closed. Southeastern services will also not serve London Bridge except for trains to and from Hastings.

I'd surmise from that that something pretty big must be happening on the London Bridge works?

Commissioning the future lines 3 and 4, temporarily to be the Charing Cross lines, in the half mile or so east of London Bridge. From that point, both Cannon St and both Charing Cross lines will be 4 abreast from London Bridge all the way to New Cross. This leaves the south side of the track completely clear for rebuilding, including the installation of some point work, ready to open this Christmas / New Year when the fist new 'high level' lines open at London Bridge and also the new Borough Market viaduct is brought into use.

There is also some significant track work between London Bridge and Waterloo East over the same weekend (and the weekend before).

Not if it has been asked before but how is the new concourse going to be accessed from London Bridge underground station?

At the moment you access the Southern platforms through a small arcade and up the escalators. Are those escalators remaining or are they going to be removed and one will carry on through to the new concourse?

That bank of escalators goes.

Imagine yourself walking towards them, through the arcade (known as the vaults). Where they are now will be a continuation of the vaults, which will link directly into the new concourse. The vaults are also being widened to three times current width.

Incidentally, the prep work this weekend just gone went well, travellers to Charing Cross will see half a junction installed just where the line crosses Southwark Bridge road. The other half is part of the work this coming weekend.

Yes - noticed that. And saw some new cross-over track on sleepers being stored lying at the town end of the new viaduct that will carry the CHX lines.

Have noticed recently what looks like temporary track for service trains(?) running roughly where tracks 7 and 8 will be (just south of the current CHX lines), between London Bridge and the Bermondsey Diveunder. The sleepers have a squarer cross section - deeper and narrower - and also closer together than normal sleepers. The track itself also doesn't sit as deep in the ballast as normal working track. Is this temporary track for works trains?
