London Bridge mileages

As anyone who has ever been will be aware, the lines east of London Bridge get quite complex. The lines diverge twoards Deptford, New Cross, New Cross Gate and Peckham Rye, but there are many crossovers, spurs and junctions.

Does anyone know if there is a difference in mileage for trains taking the New Cross Spur to get towards New Cross, rather than going via the North East Kent Jn area. Both RailMiles and Quail are of no use for this.

Remind me which one is North East Kent Jn. This is the area where the Charing Cross bound lines head off on their own viaduct, yes?

Nope, where the Deptford line parts from the New Cross / Lewisham line...

North East Kent Junction is at 4m 25ch, where the up Deptford and the down Deptford split from the main line to New Cross.

When was the New Cross Spur put in? I can't find it in my maps.

Always been there AFAIK, looking at Quail it doesn't show a difference for the two, but there clearly is one. 4.38 (Spur mileage) is where the Spur joins, 4.38 on the traditional line is where the ELL passes under on the way into the station, which is a way before the Spur joins.

I don't really follow. It goes off after Southwark Park, at the same point that the Brighton Main Line leaves, and where the old connection chords (disused) go under...

Ah, that'll be why. My maps only cover the South Eastern side, not the South Central.

Erm... It's the line on the first rail overbridge northwards from Canal Jn on the ELL.

Yes, that's the viaduct that carries two Charing Cross lines aside from the rest.

It is somewhere in the region of 0.8-1.2 chains longer.

You can have a little measure on Google Earth if you want.

Yes, I think that's the same place. I was looking on Google Earth. I.ve just measured it up and it works out at less than half a chain.

There's a similar divergence on the Midland Main line in the area of Silkstream Junction. It'd be interesting to know if there is a standard way of calculating distances though I suspect that it would be the shortest route.

Having looked at it in the London Railway Atlas, I don't think there's much difference, maybe a chain or two, I'll leave it. Thanks for all the help anyway!

I too Google Earthed it, I doubt there's much difference either. Does anyone have the TRACKatlas?

From what I saw, there was no real help other than jn names. Certainly no change of mileage.
