London Bashing

I'm spending a whole day in the capital this coming Saturday. Except between 3 and 5 where I shall be attending football in east London, I plan to do some bashing with a twist. I want to do as many different classes of stock as possible with a Zone 1-6 (or possibly 1-9 if it gives me some more exotic options) travelcard. Since my own speciality area is in EMT/SWT territory, I would like to ask for help with planning for other parts of London. Please feel free to suggest anything that you feel are worth doing, taking into account the ones I've already done this year (in my signature), and the routes they work on if not widely used, such as the 171s used by Southern.

The ones that I know of working in London:
159 (SWT)
165 (FGW)
168 (NCH)
171 (SN)
319 (FCC)
332 (HX)

360 (HC)
455 (SWT/SN)
458 (SWT)

Since moat if the ones on your list working quite a few services, just turn up at the relative terminal, although you won't get a 168 on a travelcard or a 332

You *might* get a 168 on a Travelcard, but it would require a certain amount of luck. There are one or two workings over the Met booked for 168s which you could get to or from Harrow.

SWT's 159 may be hard as some run fast to Woking.

Generally, the only journey you can do on a 159 in the Travelcard zones is Clapham Junction to London Waterloo, in that direction only. Going the other way, services pick-up passengers only at Clapham Junction so if you get gripped (which is unlikely I admit), you will be charged for a ticket to Woking. FYI, these services depart from Clapham Junction platform 7 at 37 minutes past the hour.

332's I'll need to pop down to the airport for the free section. Well they all count I guess, then 360's can be done the same way. The ones like 159 aren't priorities as I get to do them quite often some other time and they are quite common place all over the country.

Any 442's call at East Croydon these days? Used to ride them all the time before being replaced by the 444's.

332 you'll have to pay for, you can't get them on a Travelcard. You can get a 360 to Hayes & Harlington

You may also be able to get a 166 on a local service out of Paddington.

At a push on a travelcard , bus or tube to / from Heathrow then 332 to terminal 5 (travel is free between Heathrow terminals)

170: You *might* find one of these in Liverpool Street, but don't hold your breath! Even if you do, it probably won't stop inside the Travelcard area.
172: Works dependant. I am not sure the GOBLIN will be open.
313: Head down to the Northern City Line at Moorgate.
315: Dead easy. Pretty much any "Metro" service in the north-eastern quarter will provide this.
317: Not as easy, but still not a problem. Find a slow train out towards Cambridge or the like, and bail out at Tottenham Hale, or alternatively head to King's Cross.
357: Fenchurch Street has eight departures an hour. Leave at West Ham for the best effect, and head up to Stratford from there.
365: Unless you can pull off King's Cross to Finsbury Park this will be difficult.
375: SE units that run to some of the more distant locations. Find one to Bromley South, or alternatively shuttle between Charing Cross and London Bridge.
376: Heading out towards Greenwich and the like is a good one to try.
377: Almost all longer-distance SN services use these. Go to East Croydon for the best effect, and couple with a different unit to/from Zone 1.
378: See the note about the 172. Your best bet otherwise is New Cross Gate.
395: Get your wallet ready.
444: A real challenge, this one. Unless you can pull off Waterloo to Clapham Junction, or vice-versa, it would take a minor miracle to use one of these.
450: Any SWT blue train. The easiest tactic would be to find a Windsor & Eton Riverside service.
456: Look out for these coupled to certain SN 455s. Alternatively, try the South London Line.
465: Mixed in with the 376 lot, so most of SE's Metro routes are worth trying.
466: Same as above.

I have listed every unit I can think of that is possible and hasn't been covered already (or listed in the first post).

Southern 171 units work London Bridge to Uckfield running fast from london Bridge to East Croydon, one train per hour.

On Saturday leaving LBG at xx:08 arriving ECR at xx:22
Reverse is ECR xx:33 arriving LBG at xx:49

317- also out of Kings Cross, more likely to be found on stopping services (and 321s as well)- plus aren't Chingford (from Liverpool Street) and Stratford-West Anglia services 317?
321 and 360 also on Great Eastern services from Liverpool Street that stop at Stratford.
378: all the "Overground" except GOBLIN, which is 172s. May be limited running though.

444: A real challenge, this one. Unless you can pull off Waterloo to Clapham Junction, or vice-versa, it would take a minor miracle to use one of these.

Generally the only journey that is possible on a 444 in the travelcard zones is Clapham Junction to Waterloo, in that direction only, although there are a handful of trains booked 444 that stop at Surbiton.

Sorry I meant that I get to travel on them quite often in/out of Salisbury so not a major priority for me. I thought EMT had 159's but I was obviously wrong :cry:

Already done 313/377/378/444/450/465/466 so these are fine. 170s I'll get to do a lot with XC to BHM so they're way down my list too. Thanks for the advice on the rarer ones.

Are SN the only ones to run 456s?

Anyone got the price for BZ6 - WFJ on a CDR? Any chance of doing a 390 or are they all pick-up only inbound and vice-versa?

I'll leave the 395s for one of the through journeys I have during the year.

All 456s are operated by SN, and they rarely venture beyond Zone 6. The furthest out they are even remotely likely to appear is Horsham.

As for 390s, I can't provide the costs (not sure how to do it on NRE; I have no access to the latest version of NFM), but as far as I know local travel is not permitted between Euston and Watford.

N.B., for further information for anyone who may require the 466, note that this class tends to run the "minor" (or short) routes operated by SE. A good bet for this class is Bromley North.
