Loco number fonts

Hi,

Sorry for the long winded post,

I'm doing a bit of design work based on Locomotive numbers, and I'm wondering, is there anyone who can give me pointers on the specific fonts and designs used on various ages of locomotives and polling stock?

I'm looking at a range of eras, including Southern steam and electric, British Railways steam and first generation diesels, BR blue era locos and multiple units, NSE and Regional stock, The BR Freight sector logos, and modern TOC numbering and liveries including freight.

I'm also interested in any lining/borders and other details such as shed codes etc. and specific details of livery colours (i.e pantone references if possible).

Is there any authoritiative source, or book on this subject, or website which people could point me towards that might be able to help with this.

Also, I'm assuming the BR residual body will be the copyright holder for the BR double arrow logo, the freight sector logos and earlier BR and pre-privatisation designs. Would I be correct in this assumption?

From NRE:

The double-arrow headed roundel that forms part of the logo is the property of the Department for Transport and is licensed to ATOC.

Dunno about the rest. Aren't most numbers in "Railway Font" or something with a similar name)?

British Railways used Gill Sans
British Rail used Rail Alphabet, available here: http://britishrail.uk.com/home/
(On that is also the BR Design Guide; with Pantone colours.)
