Hey guys first post so be gentle and apologies if I'm making a pointless thread. Its unintentional .

I see a lot of posting about the importance of location on these boards and others. Some say your application will essentially not even be looked at because you're not in the correct area.

How about if you are willing to re locate for your career? I'm hoping to get onto a trainee position and then reloacate. I cannot really afford to just move somewhere and hope to find a job.

I guess I'm asking am I wasting my time filling out all the applications if they are going to not read past my address? FWIW I am stating wherever possible that I'm planning on relocating if my application successful.

All you can do is apply and go from there. You may be successful, you may not. While location is important, as you can understand a TOC being reluctant to train a driver who lives miles away as they may just leave the company when qualified, it seems different TOCs place different levels of importance on this (you hear stories of people being accepted from miles away). However, due to the sheer volume of applicants, it may be that the TOC bin off the distant applicants straight off as they could have hundreds of suitable candidates on the doorstep.

Either way you would be expected to live much closer to your depot once getting the job. Before I was successful at becoming at becoming a trainee driver, I'd applied for a couple of depot driver roles that were some distance away. Although I never followed the jobs up as I wanted to see if I could get a trainee driver post somewhere, I was invited to interviews for these despite living miles away. Driver applications I made to distant TOCs were declined within 24hrs.

I think it is quite possibly easier to get a depot driving/shunter driver job if further away than a driving job and this can lead onto mainline driving, although there is no gurantee it will.

I have applied to First, living out of the 50 mins commuting distance and that seems to be ok for them but when I applied to Northern saying I would relocate they said they weren't intrested. So basically what W230 said..... Depends who you apply to. If you really want the career, just fill out the apps and hope for the best.

Clearly put on your application form that you are willing to relocate, if you get to the interview stages take some evidence with you such as rent/house prices in the area to prove that you are going to or have the intention to relocate. A freind of mine applied for a job and his application was definately a good shout but he didn't get through the sift because he was too far and didn't put on his form that he was willing to relocate. So SW1ller have you got to the assessment stage with First?

Go for it. Apply for anything anywhere if you are willing to relocate.

Worked for me and I relocated over 200 miles!

I heard once that they don't like people relocating because they think once you're qualified you'll just move back where you came from =/ Worked for me though and some other people...

If that's the case they need to add it to the contract of employment. If you move you have to sacrifice your employment - easy solution

Well you don't know if it's OK with them until you get invited to assessment. That comment may make people apply for jobs when if fact noone knows yet if location is an issue with Northern.
