Location restriction - Valid only via Banbury

I am travelling to Leamington Spa in a week. I'm travelling from Kent (non-Highspeed, travelling up to Charing Cross).

My ticket states "Valid only for travel via (changing trains or passing through) Banbury."

Now I am aware the normal route would be to travel directly from Marylebone to Leamington on Chiltern.

Either on my outward journey or inward journey, out of pure interest and not to make my life easier, I would like to travel from Paddington to Reading or Oxford, and then switch to CrossCountry for the remainder of my journey (or in reverse).

Is this allowed under my ticket? It is technically "via Banbury", but is it actually a valid route, considering Chiltern's direct service exists?

If you have a geographically routed ticket it is I believe considered* valid via any permitted route to the stated geographical location and any permitted route from it to the destination. I don't quite get the geography of what you are proposing but if it passes through Banbury and doesn't double back etc then I can't see why it wouldn't be.

* It *was* the case that you only considered this if there weren't any through Permitted Routes that passed through it, but I believe all journey planners consider both through Permitted Routes that pass through it AND permitted routes to and from it - certainly planners doing that was what caused me some confusion over validity of a similar ticket in the past. And the new NRCoT makes planners the sole arbiter of what is Permitted, so if you can get the itinerary it is valid.

You should really tell us more details about your ticket, but if it’s not restricted to a specific operator and is probably +VIA BANBURY then it’s valid as you want.

I'd usually ask that the exact ticket is mentioned, but in this case we can answer the question in general terms about the validity of "+via Banbury" tickets between London and Banbury.

Without even looking at the origin or destination of the ticket, we can conclude that for the route "+via Banbury," then using the split route check between London and Banbury, it's valid via Oxford, as London to Banbury is a mapped route via Oxford.

What's valid the other side of London is unknown, as we don't know the origin. And beyond Banbury, that's simply the direct line to Leamington in this particular case, but for other destinations could vary.

Others have noted that via Reading is possible. Depending on the connection at Reading, it might even be faster when compared to a Chiltern stopping service.

I believe there's a "via High Wycombe" restriction on some other tickets whcih can act as a "Chiltern only" proxy south of Banbury.

The ticket had no additional restrictions (ie Chiltern only), it is a super off peak return (return within one month) for one adult with Railcard.

The origin station is Hildenborough.

If all it says is via Banbury, and doesn't mention London then I guess if you had plenty of time could go via Tonbridge, Redhill, Reading, and take a cross country train via Banbury to Leamington.

Not an unreasonable route to avoid using the tube.

From London, tickets to Kings Sutton and Banbury are routed Any Permitted. It's then via Banbury for Leamington Spa through to Stratford-upon-Avon and via High Wycombe for Lapworth through to Kidderminster.
