I seem to spend hours trawling through free texture sites, there is just so much junk on most of them they should really be branded as crap shots of random things sites.

Occasionally, a real gem can be found though which makes the effort worthwhile and I've spotted a handul on there so thanks for the link; some new trees and skies appearing soon!

Glad to be of use, looking forward to your trees, but the birch tree on the site looks a bit dodgy to me! I'm playing with the water textures, as these never seem to be presented very convincingly to me on some routes I've seen.
Bless you for your tutorials, Dennis, life will never be the same again.
Regards, Alan. :-P

Here's a quick effort with the birch tree;

not too bad; could do with being a bit slimmer and with a longer trunk though - few minutes in photoshop will sort that out.

Nice one Dennis, you don't hang about. The birch seems a lot better than expected - I'm still trying to get the transparent background sorted. Why do I have so much trouble when I convert from 24 bit to 8 bit & resize? I always seem to get a lot of "dithering" around what should be clean edges & it's a pain to sort out manually around an irregular surface like a tree.
Cheers! Alan.

Below is the procedure I use with Photoshop - the majority of image editing programs will allow the same procedure (although they may be named differently);

For textures with a pure single colour background, I normally convert to 8 bit mode with no dither selected; this prevent averaging of colours around the edges. Then select a region of the backgound, normally with a low tolerance value (generally 1) and with the anti-alias option active. Additionally selecting similar regions, again with a low tolerance value, will allow the rest of the background colour to be selected. These regions can all then be cut leaving (ideally) a pure black background.

When resizing textures, resample using nearest neighbour rather than bilinear or bicubic resampling as these (and similar settings) will average the colour of the edge pixels and add fringing.

HTH.

Thanks Dennis,
Off to the locoshed now, but will give that a try in the morning. Anything for an easy life! I don't know how you guys cope when you build a complete route, I mean I'm just stalling on a single bitmap. At this rate my efforts will be ready in about 2038...
Cheers for now, Alan.
