just wondering how long the TOC's will keep a CV on there books for. i have recently uploaded mine to East Coasts and intend to apply to GC and Northern in the future when jobs become available on a speculative basis. i cannot leave my current employment with the Royal Navy until Feb 2015, but i can be released if i can be spared up to 3 months prior to leaving the service. i would like to be part of the customer service/onboard train crew if was to pass all relevant assessments as customer service is something i do in my day to day job. any tips or pointers i should be aware of would be grately appreciated.

I think by sending you CV is a very good idea however whether they keep it on file is another thing. If I was in your position I would wait until you are free to leave the navy and apply for all the jobs advertised that suit you.

Cheers TDK, i've already been asked by my resettlement officer as to "why the railways". my reply was, i'll have been in the RN 23 years when i leave and alll i have done is use the rail network to get home. i don't mind working unsociable hours, i've worked away from home which isn't a problem and i like to think i can get on with people face to face. his reply"fair enough". which i think is an added bonus. i do have other employment ideas but rail is my first choice hands down. i will most likely start applying from June next year and see where that gets me. also would they do a job placement to see if was for me, a bit like when you were at school?

They will snap you up with 23 years service in the RN. Lots of ex military on the railway, you can tell in the messrooms as well - it has that feel to it sometimes.

I have a mate who's in the RN but he's looking to leave now. He has been told that if he has a solid job offer they will waive his notice as they are after redundancies, is that not the same for yourself? Could your DO not sort something for you? If I were you I would be applying for jobs as soon as you have your 12 months notice in then get onto your DO to release you if you get something. Railway recruitment can sometimes be slow, it is not inconceivable to wait 9 months or longer from applying to starting anyway.

Worst thing that could happen is that you can't get released and you would have to ask to be considered for a course later in the year as they are always after people in the big companies.

yeah often see staff with there veterans badges on and tip them a nod and a wink. I have looked into getting early release but as my branch is so short at minute they won't even consider it. and besides i'm currently doing an instructors job teaching the next generation of sailors. but once i reach the magical 365 days to go i'll be all over applying for jobs like a rash. at the minute i've got 614 days to go.

TBH I'd wait until a few months before you are due to leave the RN, there no doubt will be a lot of changes to franchises in the next few years, and very possible that the companies operating them will change. Hard to say at the minute with things being up in the air.
