The ideal would be a second service per hour, but it may be difficult to path and would obviously cost more as you need another crew. And that might make the service so popular that you need 12 cars on both!
It's certainly the route that holds most water as its the option that is likely to further grow the service as you say, frequency grows it not longer trains that may always be delayed.

At least the Liverpool-New St is going back to 2tph, so clearly LNWR routes are showing good passenger numbers

but it seems to work fine on the 8-car trains at the 4-car stations between liverpool and Brum...
Apart from Parkway, Winsford and Smethwick Galton Bridge, sure!

Smethwick is the worst culprit for UDS stations in both directions

That also fits with the use of 730s - a 5-car 730 twice an hour will be ideal for that route, but a 10-car would be overkill.

The Trent is going to be mostly 10.730 I believe once they arrive?

It simply has to be right? 2tph 5 car 730 should be great for the Liverpool's, but I can't see anything less than 10x 730, or 8x 350 for any Trent service going forward. It's just too popular now.

To think back to those 4 car services via Stoke.....

I haven't noticed any problems on those trains either north or south of Crewe.

I fairness, I normally only pick up a delay of a minute or so. So I'd imagine most passengers not in coach 5 would have little idea.

But I'd still say its something that really shouldn't be happening by people just don't pay any attention to manual or auto announcements

Is there a way of making an announcement in only the part of the train effected, for example, just announce to the rear 4 cars that passengers need to move forward?

I've seen people panic they are in the wrong part of the train after the announcements on the approach to Atherstone when in fact they aren't...

Yes, it only plays in the rear part (the auto announcement). The manual one can be for just the rear or all of the train

Given the slow lines on the West Coast Main Line are not at capacity - is there scope for an hourly service between Crewe and Northampton via the Trent Valley to complement the existing hourly Crewe-London service?

Problem is, going via Northampton adds 30 minutes to the journey, so anyone who is currently using the Trent Valley service isn't likely to want to use a service that takes 30 minutes longer, especially when you run the risk of it being a 350/2.

I meant just Crewe - Northampton. 4 coaches instead if 8 but gives a half hourly service between Crewe and Rugby given the size of the towns along the Trent Valley, surely sufficient demand?

The majority of the demand is from the Trent Valley stations into Euston from experience, I don't think there is a great amount of travel between the local stations to warrant a second service.

Surely the local nature of the service is not what is being defended, & it's not what I see (or have done.) Lots of people here have explained that access from the N to Tamworth and Nuneaton for NE/SW or East-bound journeys is a major traffic generator. (e.g Crewe and north thereof to Peterborough and points east.)
Via Tamworth is even my preferred way to get to Derby!

So, you're suggesting there is sufficient demand for a local Crewe-Rugby service in addition the the Crewe - Euston service?

I'm saying that I can quite see that traffic from one Trent Valley station to another is almost irrelevant. I have seen loads of people joining all down the Trent valley, I assume en route to Euston. However a better service going south from Crewe would be well worthwhile as it would make better connections onto all the lines it crosses. Another post upthread has already pointed out that lots of journeys are offered/made on one train in 1 direction but changing on the other because the timetable is so assymetric. 2 trains an hour, maybe only as far as Rugby or even MK would be a great improvement.

Look at Crewe to Peterborough on any journeyplanner: once an hour, wait 40 minutes at (correctd) nuneaton Not saying just that southbound journey, but lots of people change onto the LNR at Crewe and disperse onto other trains at PBO.

This isn't even taking into account the fact it's doubtful WMT would get the access rights for a second service per hour. Performance on the west coast south of Hanslope is very poor as it is. Even if you could thread a TPR compliant path in one adverse signal and it's out of path with no recovery time.

Now the Nottingham to Birmingham XC service has been cut back to 1 per hour Mondays to Fridays there is usually about a 50min wait when changing at Tamworth if you are coming from Burton or Derby which makes the route less attractive for East Midlands to London journeys.

As a local I can say there is plenty of demand for local journeys up the trent valley however demand is being suppressed by unreliability by either cancellations or trains being expressed from Rugby to Crewe. Stafford college students have had a rough time of it. It seems that the trent valley is the first to be sacrificed if there is disruption.

This forum never ceases to amaze.

We're talking about 12 car pseudo-InterCity operation on the busiest day for leisure travel, are we not? There's a real chance this will boost use of these already popular services even further. So why not. It's no different to Northern running 6 car 195s on Manchester-Sheffield services on weekends for example. (Which admittedly doesn't seem to happen anymore, but it certainly has done). Those are generally "local trains for local people" and the rear carriage is only accommodated at Marple, Manchester bound only. There were no issues there whenever I used them.

There have been many, many valid complaints in the past of London Midland running short crush loaded services at weekends and leaving stock in depots to avoid strengthening. Yet now their successor IS strengthening beyond the current booked norm, people are complaining!

I agree, it's infuriating.

I don't think people are complaining about increasing capacity per set, it's whether the option chosen by DfT is the correct one for growing what is clearly a successful route.

If its so successful that the DfT wish to strengthen the service despite some awful connection times (54 minutes at Crewe from Liverpool for instance), then imagine how much that could improve by adding further services or timetabling it better.

Adding an extra 4 cars to some trains won't make it that more attractive, the front 4 will be empty at Crewe an Euston as the 8 cars often are now (ignoring Sundays). Frequency trumps capacity in most cases. And in this case, even improved waiting times would likely trump extra capacity

The Nottingham to Birmingham service returns to every half hour in December.

It was typically four coaches until they routed it direct between Stafford and Crewe.
I used to get the 0746 ex EUS and 1931 ex CRE every fortnight in 2019, and was always 4 cars. Usually a /2. Must have just been very unlucky.

as (apparently) does Liverpool to Crewe... we shall soon see whether it is yet more jam tomorrow!
The Liverpool - Crewe - Birmingham service is only going to be half hourly in the morning and evening peak periods, according to National Rail app.

I think it’s half hourly all day Saturday which makes sense . I wonder whether the off-peak weekday reduction is to allow for driver training on the 730s as they start to appear ?

There are some hours without the additional train, but I haven't seen the diagrams to be able to confirm which ones are skipped.

I believe it's more to do with keeping some spare units where possible. Drivers are being detached already for 730 training as it is.

The point I was trying to make is that along the Trent Valley, commuting between Trent Valley stations (ie Stafford-Lichfield, Tamworth-Nuneaton etc.) is not maximised due to their only being an hourly service - whereas half hourly would make this more attractive.

Additionally, given the hourly service, it means connections at Crewe (to/from Chester/Liverpool/Manchester Airport), Stafford (to/from Manchester), Rugeley (to/from Walsall), Lichfield (to/from Sutton Coldfield), Tamworth (to/from Derby), Nuneaton (to/from Leicester) and Rugby (to/from Northampton) can be long and if there are delays/cancellations very unattractive. Even the ones I've listed shows how many connections could be possible, reducing the need to go into Birmingham or other stations - whilst the slow lines between Crewe and Stafford aren't as strained in terms of capacity as the fast.

My suggestion of an hourly Crewe-Northampton was because of the limited track space on the fast lines south of Rugby. The Northampton line does have capacity and would allow a large town to have better links to the North of England again.

Adding this all up - looking to reduce car use in Staffordshire/Warwickshire, enhancing connectivity between lines and providing new links to major settlements is why I suggested a half hourly link along the Trent Valley

I agree with almost all of this. There are many useful connections on the Trent and they are very well used as has been stated before.

The bit which I don't agree with is the need for the service to call/terminate at Northampton which already had multiple trains in each direction, including a connection onto the Trent at Rugby already.

That and a good fair chunk of the Trent valley passengers are actually travelling to/from Euston. So to add an additional train but not have it call at Euston would really limit any increase in PAX as they would either need to wait for the next train from Rugby, or go via Northampton which negates any reason for that service to exist.

I'm other words, what you suggest would only be good for Northampton and those that board and alight at stations between Rugeley and Nuneaton only

There are unlikely any paths into London - which is why I suggested Northampton - Rugby could be a terminus point too. The point I am making of an extra service (even if just a 4 coach service) is to enhance connectivity onto all the lines they bypass to reduce the need to go into Birmingham and to speed overall journey times between different towns and cities.

Most stations have had an increase in London services with the new Avanti timetables - Stafford now has a Chester/Manchester (losing Liverpool), Nuneaton & Rugby both have a Manchester service. Therefore the need to continue the service to London is reduced and better connections are made at these stations to allow for Rugeley/Lichfield/Tamworth passengers to use them instead.

An extra service should focus on boosting connectivity onto Cross Country and West Midlands Trains services whilst avoiding the major cities to tackle congestion and overcrowding

Rugby would be awful as a terminus, it doesn't have any bays and P5 and 6 get used all the time. Northampton does have bays.
