A lot of people have return tickets so not many people buy tickets at that time of day.

My first railway gig was in that ticket office at Euston. When I asked why tickets were never checked at that time of day, the answer was that most people would be holding return tickets!

I would imagine it will be similar to some Merseyrail ticket offices at the quieter stations in the late evenings, getting a passenger at say Town Green at 9pm would probably be a major event.
Similar to some of those ticket offices which are on stations which see an hourly service which passes within a couple minutes of each other.

Almost no demand at all for ticket sales of any kind at that sort of time, I'd imagine. After 2300 on a weekday you've got the 2330 to Birmingham (not a busy train) plus a few LNRs that don't go past Northampton (some just to MKC). Almost everybody travelling on those trains will be on the return half of a return ticket or a season plus a few fare dodgers.
Edit: I could even read the message I was replying to properly! On a Saturday there are no Avantis after 2300.
It appears to be 4 Northamptons (almost everyone will have a return ticket) and 4 LOs to Watford (almost everyone will be using contactless or Oyster, or fare dodging).

Indeed, except I was working at a major station in central London.
I passed through Euston at the weekend and noticed that an WMT operated Excess Fares window on platform 11 has opened.
I don't know if this is something that DfT or London Travelwatch insisted on as part of the agreement to close the WMT operated ticket office at Euston but it's good to see it open.

That's been there for years. It was originally served from the back of the old booking office there. It's not always open though.
I beg to differ.
Screenshot shows a LinkedIn post by a WMT Area Manager celebrating the re-opening of the Excess fares window which has been closed since 2021.

Blimey celebrating a capability that a Leading Railman and a PORTIS machine delivered 40 years ago. No doubt they will now start keeping the Barriers closed after 20:00 every day to protect revenue.
