You don't need to challenge anyone- just check that the screen above the seat is showing that it is reserved, and politely say that you have a reservation for that seat. The vast majority of people will apologise and move.

Even the most aggressive nutter will say "no" well before it escalates to fisticuffs.

Surely G & F are the unreserved coaches?
Same with H - E on the 225 sets?

Er no, why would you think that?

Coach H is unreservable on IC225s. HSTs have all coaches reservable.

I've never known a TOC have so many coaches reserved

I mean that is sort of the whole point of the thread to discuss why LNER is so different to others in this regard.

Thats how it works with GWR and EMT (HSTs, I don't travel on 222s, and the reservation system on the 800s is always broken so I haven't worked out the pattern yet), the coaches nearest the buffet are always unreserved (well technically E on GWR HSTs is reservable, but in practice is unreserved except the busiest services)
And in practice A on EMT is often unreserved too.

Yes and we're talking about LNER not GWR or EMT and I can assure you that that is not how it works on LNER.

But they are both Intercity TOCs with the same trains as LNER.
How do reservations work on LNER then?
Do they not fill the train up from coach B?

Another point is why LNER can't offer more trains through August to Edinburgh. At least the 11a could start from Edinburgh instead of Newcastle?

Because their fleet is already being flogged half to death running their current timetable to the point that they've removed from services from the timetable to ease the pressure on it.
