Just collected a Stevenage - London Zones 1-6 from the LNER TVM at SVG.

In addition to the ticket, which printed fine were two receipts:

A collection receipt
Another coupon headed receipt

Surely these receipts are a complete waste of ticketing stock, they went straight in the bin.

The online confirmation should be the receipt, with any further receipt being uvula a request button.

I’m sure at least one forum member will be interested ;)

Surely they should give you a collection receipt (one) to show that you have collected the ticket (and potentially also that it has finished printing them)?

That seems awfully wasteful.

One piece of card for the actual ticket, and two pieces of card for receipts.

In these times of cost control and environmental concern it doesn’t seem right.

Even a supermarket self checkout no longer automatically prints a receipt.

I actually think the set up of these TVMs has changed recently. I’m sure they only used to print one receipt.

Asda still give without printing. Only Sainsbury's and M&S I've come across which don't print be default. Is a pain in the neck - always need the receipt in case one is checked by security!
Given for trains, that the ticket is your essential documentation to access the service, it makes sense to get more paperwork as you are not buying a simple product [or selection of] of which possession simply shows you own/have right to access it. Ticket gates often swallow tickets so if there is a problem with the journey it can at least provide additional documentation.

Merseyrail ticket offices have now done receipt free by default even if you pay by card. They will still provide a receipt on request - much like how it always has been when you pay by cash. In the case of online bookings, yes the email confirmation or the booking confirmation displayed at the end of the booking is your receipt.

I do not agree with supermarkets trying to go receipt free. This is all very well and good in terms of saving paper but what about when you experience a problem with a product and need to take something back. They are still going to ask for your receipt in most cases.

I use the collection receipt to submit with my expense claim to any organisation who is paying for my journey (e.g. employer) and keep the credit card receipt to cross check with my statement. When buying at a ticket office for a reimbursable journey I ask for both types of receipt.

Security in supermarkets have no right to check customers receipts. They can only stop customers if they see the item being selected, see it concealed and maintain constant observation until the final point of payment is passed.

Source? I would have thought it entirely reasonable for shops to have terms and conditions displayed at the entrance stating that they can check/search customers suspected of theft. Security tagged items & alarms being the main concern.

The retail industry is not like the railway.

There are no bylaws under which retails can stop, detain, charge or prosecute people suspected of crime.

You won’t see any terms and conditions or anything equivalent to the NRCoT.

Retail Management and security staff can detain a shoplifter by means of a citizens arrest. Stopping someone at the exit of a shop to check receipts is akin to a citizens arrest and you are not obliged to comply. A private citizen can not arrest on suspicion alone, and an arrest where an offence had not taken place could have legal consequences for the person making the arrest.

You don’t enter into a contract simply by entering a shop.

You can withdraw someone’s permission to enter a shop and if they then choose to enter in the future they’re committing an act of trespass.

Welcome to the world outside the railway where there aren’t bylaws to cover this sort of thing!

Most of the time they won't even ask to look in a bag if the alarm does go off, but at the end of the day if they've stopped printing receipts they absolutely can't expect you to have one, and if they did decide to take a risk and detain you (at the risk of them getting into legal hot water and losing a customer for life) then they can very easily view the details of a recent transaction.

The only time I think a receipt is useful is when I walk out and five minute later realise I've been overcharged for something, typically because the discount label wasn't covering the original barcode. Always nice to be able to check on that.
