Evening,

Could anyone tell me about the LNER train manager role?

Are you the lead person on board?
Is it safety critical?
What’s the rest day pattern like? And start finish times?
Also, routes? Are there over night stays etc?
Plenty of opportunities for rest day working?

Looking at the role based out of Kings Cross. I am current on board staff for another TOC, but looking to move on.

You are the lead person on board, however the rest of the crew pretty much get on with their own role. You’d need to liaise with them during out of course situations and emergencies. Your primary duties will be train dispatch, safe running of the train, liaising with the driver when needed and revenue checks.
It is safety critical, subject to passing psychometrics and a medical.
Rest day pattern very much depends on what link you’re in but you won’t be rostered more than 6-7 days in a row and may have as many as 5-6 rest days in a row. Weekends tend to be one on one off.
Earliest start in Kings Cross is around 0525, latest finish around 0130. You’d likely be placed in a late link as a new starter, you can apply for earlier links when they become available but these are allocated by seniority so you may have to wait a while.
Kings Cross TMs work KGX-LDS, KGX-NCL, KGX-LCN and some York terminators. Also some diversionary routes during engineering works such as Cambridge. No overnight stays.
Rest day work is usually available although there are times of the year when it’s easier to get like Christmas and school holidays due to high levels of people on leave around those times. Allocated using an equalisation system i.e. if more have applied for it than is available it’ll be given to the ones that have done less rdw across the year.
