LNER ticket valid via Cambridge?

Hello,

Does anyone know if a LNER ticket from London to Peterborough is valid via Cambridge? I've asked three staff at Peterborough station and none of them seem to know for sure.

As I understand things it could only ever be valid on an LNER train that was diverted via Cambridge, and I expect they wouldn’t stop there anyway. There’d be no validity in normal day to day circumstances.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by an LNER ticket. Do they issue an operator specific ticket for this journey, because I can't see one on National Rail Enquiries? If it is just an ordinary single or return, NRE would suggest it is valid via Cambridge, and I'm sure any memeber of booking office or travel centre staff should be able to confirm this simply by imputting a journey via Cambridge and seeing if your ticket is allowed.

An off peak single is the same price for both routes it just takes 2.5x as long via Cambridge.

An LNER Only ticket wouldn't be.

An Any Permitted ticket is likely to be.

I used a Doncaster to Reading ticket via Cambridge two years ago with no raised eyebrows so presumably it’s on a map somewhere. But evidently LNER only tickets would not be valid.

There are very few route:LNER tickets from Peterborough to London. They obviously wouldn't be valid via Cambridge in normal circumstances (as LNER don't serve Cambridge).

If Peterbrother actually holds a route:Any Pernitted ticket then that is valid via Cambridge (mapped route on AD and KP). As far as I can see you could go via Kennett,Newmarket,Dullingham if you had the time and inclination.

London to Peterborough is valid via Cambridge, but if the route is LNER only it would only be valid that way on days when LNER are diverted that way.

There are no standard class fares from Peterborough to London routed ‘LNER only’. There are ‘Any Permitted’ and ‘GTR only’.

LNER offer Advance fares but these are booked train only which ordinarily don’t operate via Cambridge.

I recall when I was in norwich there were a bunch of operator-specific tickets around, IIRC I looked up tickets to scotland out of curiosity and the operator-specific ones (both LNER and crosscountry) were much cheaper than the any-permitted one.

The operator specific tickets you refer to are advance purchase tickets. Interestingly, advance purchase tickets from Norwich to Ayr are routed AP Berwick rather than LNER and Connections.

There used to be not sure if there is still now a very knowlegeble young chap at Peterborough prob late 30s or poss early 40s very enthusiastic and a wealth of knowledge, never got his name but wears glasses. He sold me the ticket back in the day and when I looked at it, it was the same ticket that I normally buy super off peak return Peterborough to London Terminals route any permitted. He even knew of easements on the basis if the passenger knew of them he would oblige as legally they are allowed, and one time I even got a hand written ticket but can't remember what that was for, this is going back 7/8 yrs, wish I had taken a photo of the handwritten ticket as when the revenue protection team came on first capital connect the RPI smiled and moved on!!

LNER ONLY is cheaper for First class ticket or a Single, but not for Off Peak or Anytime Returns (and the off peak ticket appears to be more restrictive than the ANY PERMITTED)

The tickets are all more restrictive, as all LNER run on this line is one train to Inverness and one to Stirling. Just to make things worse, the southbound train leaves Pitlochry just before the LNER off peak ticket becomes valid.

I suspect every TOC has some uncompetitive fares, though. I just read "very few ... tickets" and thought "tickets of which they sell very few".
