Four years ago, I posted about the zone letters that were being installed across LNER managed stations: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/lner-station-platform-zones.219743/

Are these still in use or has the idea been dropped? I ask because I saw a video from early 2024 where station announcements were clearly mentioning the zones for first and standard class, yet in a recent video of the same station this couldn't be heard. I have also noticed that the Tiger Worldline departure boards no longer shows this information: https://tiger.worldline.global/RTFD/cisds;graphic=1

Is this detail still shown locally on station departure boards or don't they bother anymore? It's a shame if they don't as it helps solve the problem of differing formations between 5, 9 and 10 carriage Azumas as well as the 225 sets. It is also useful when a smaller train uses a long platform ("this train will stop in zones 4, 5 and 6" etc) which I note has been displayed on screens and heard over announcements at some stations.

Definitely still exists at Grantham station which I use semi-frequently, so I'd imagine its still used through the network.

It's shown on the next train screens on the platform, and I noticed that Doncaster now has individual screens all along the platform showing which coach will stop there (on the northbound platform at least) which is a great idea

Great to see it's still in use. Have they removed it from the announcements across all stations or can it still be heard at some?

I've seen some photos of this and it is a great idea. Am I right in saying it even gives a layout of the carriage you are stood next to so you know where the seat numbers are, says whether there are any unreserved seats in the carriage etc? I think I saw it was a trial. Hopefully it will be rolled out to other stations as it does look very helpful, particularly to those not used to travelling by train, or who aren't familiar with the layout of LNER trains because they are from elsewhere in the UK or abroad.

Heard both the automated and human announcements at Grantham today - the latter being more nuanced including which zone for which particular carriage of an approaching Hull Trains passengers should aim for, with an explanation of where to find the zones too.

I'm please to hear it's still on the audio announcements. I wonder why it no longer appears on the Tiger departure boards? It must have been removed from the data feed it uses.

Agreed, very useful at Donny.

They're in used up in Berwick - used them several times successfully (apart from one day when the train was reversed but there was an announcement to the effect given a bit of prior warning!)

The platform zones are numbered not lettered (avoiding confusion with coach letters), and are in place at Wakefield Westgate too.

I thought they were found at most "Intercity" stations, not just LNER ones?
I'm sure last time I was on the WCML, there were zone numbers and the departure boards said "Zones 1-3 for First Class, 4-8 for Standard" or something like that

When I was at Retford last month, I noticed that they no longer make the zoned announcements any more. I think that's more of what the OP was talking about?

What do you mean by zoned announcements? Do you mean where only part of the station hears the announcement?

Avanti do have their own platform numbers, although they are specific door locations located specifically for Pendolinos.
Avanti's "where to stand" poster is avaliable at

The thread is about platform zones. The poster is referring to not hearing announcements about the zones at these stations.

Sorry I missed the few posts above and though the reply was confusing the zones with audio zones.

Interesting if they have stopped doing this at Retford but still are in Grantham, you'd have thought it would be consistent across all managed stations.

One thing I haven't asked is whether the zone information has been removed from the data feed in some way. It's interesting it's no longer on the Tiger departure boards site. The data feeds must have the information somewhere if it is still shown at some stations, although I appreciate there is more than one feed of information for this.
