I like think it looks pretty good and much better than god awful virgin east coast, which I thought was particularly bad on the 91’s

It would be interesting to see how the livery would adapt to a 91 or 43, has anyone seen any interpretations of this?

It wouldn’t do very well, as it was clearly designed with the IET in mind.

Unfortunately I have never managed a sufficiently good photograph of an 80x to use as a basis. Would I get in trouble for copywrite if I had a shot using the image corsaVXR posted above? I did previously throw caution to the wind and photoshopped an earlier image into a blue version of the LNER livery; the result was posted earlier in this topic.

Very nice, how would Apple Green or Caley Blue look?

I'm neutral on Azuma, but it is frankly ridiculous to suggest that it is xenophobic to hold a preference that a train in England should have an English name.

I honestly can't see the problem with having a Japanese name for a Japanese train or get hung up on the etymology of a particular word. It seems peculiar (at best) to object ro the Azuma branding on that ground and want `English names for English trains'. Presumably in post Brexit Britain t Pendolinos will be renamed Pendulum trains to exorcise any dangerous forrin influences. As for the Azumas, i don't know what would constitute an English enough name (leaving aside the fact the units will spend significant portion of their time in Scotland), maybe something like Flying Farages or Tommy Robinson the Tank Engine.

Why not have a crack yourself or try sketching a design incorporating the colour(s) of your choice?

I'm busy at work and don't have access to any graphics suites right now. :)

What have the Romans ever done for us?

Pendulum is from the Latin.

Edit as I’ve been beaten to it:
On that note, the entire forum seems to be going cuckoo for Python recently, which is something I can certainly get behind.
And Cleese, Idle et al are right about the forums with one thing: "If you want to get anything done in this country you've got to complain 'til you're blue in the mouth"

Horrible. It's using historic and dated colours on a modern piece of kit. Why do we keep having to live in nostalgia?

Nothing to do with nostalgia. Simply attractive colours.

Obviously GWR disagree with you.

LNER never used Caledonian Blue anyway.

Not necessarily; their locos were green, but their stock never was.
If they'd bitten the nostalgia bullet, every intermediate coach would be chocolate and cream.

My issue with red is simply that it's an aggressive colour, as is black.

It seems to me that the interior of a CrossCountry HST or a Transpennine 185, all other factors being equal, is a more relaxing environment - not because I particularly like burgundy or chalky blue, but because they are tones that don't set my teeth on edge.

There are enough other irritants associated with public transport without aesthetic environments adding to the stress, purely at the whim of marketing and branding.

I also, again personally, dislike the Azuma moniker, and the general level of reported (and experienced) staff disaffection with Virgin Trains East Coast management prior to June suggests to me that its persistent presence is again a marketing preoccupation, rather than some reflection of it being staff-chosen.

However, on the occasions when I have seen 'LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY' in its full, non-acronymised version on signage and advertising it looks powerful and authoritative (to use words that marketing folks like).

I would therefore lose the Azuma branding completely, but perhaps run 'LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY' along each carriage side, taking up the centre third of the available space, so maybe about 6 or 7 metres in length.

Interesting you should say that. If I want to draw attention to a particular display at school, I always put a red border round it. Never a red background as there’s a fair bit of study that shows red increases aggressiveness and negative attitude type behaviours.

Anything is better than Azuma. It is not nice to pronounce and not English.. What does the GWR call them?
English is a mongrel language. it has always, always will, appropriate words and names from other languages. It's why it is a mess. We are not the French. We do not have an authority taking care of the purity of the language, because it has never had any purity.
I think each one should have a different colour stripe as Court airline used to paint their aircraft.
Florida's Brightline has done this. They have five trains, so that's easy. Sixty five units though? Yes, of course they can easily be "different"; they can't be "distinctive" though.

Well they haven't gone with a heritage GWR-esque livery, otherwise their units would be chocolate and cream.

What the modern GWR has gone for is more like a heritage Southern Railway-esque livery!

A Charity called Stonewall use red in their posters to attract attention, and they are certainly not an angry organisation, more the opposite.
