LNER fare not bookable on...LNER

On Monday 29th I'm travelling Inverurie to London. Trainsplit is showing a £75.80 LNER advance fare on the 08.47 from Inverurie, changing onto the 09.52 from Aberdeen to London KX.

I'd prefer to book on LNER as I've a 20% discount to use plus they're doing 8% cash back with Monzo at the moment, but I can't get their site to show me the fare. In the past I've been able to force it to show this fare by searching on NRE, allowing extra time for change and then being redirected to LNER, but when I do this now LNER just says the fare isn't available.

Any other bright ideas for how to get the LNER website to show me a LNER set fare?!

I don't think you'll be able to get the LNER site to show you a journey via Aberdeen.

LNER won't show the faster itinerary, so the only way to use your discount and cashback is to book it as two separate journeys in one transaction, but this may cost more.

We aren't subsidised by taxpayers, so can't afford to give away cashback, discounts, perks etc; our aim is simply to provide good value fares, advanced options, and a good level of customer service.

LNER's aims are very different; their funding is different, and therefore you may find some of their fares cheaper, but this can be offset by freebies/discounts, which we don't have a source of funding to provide.

It's an LNER set fare, and you can buy other advance fares from them that involve other operators so you should be able to.

Is this one of those scenarios where the £75.80 fare tier from Inverurie to London Kings Cross is available on certain trains, with only a limited quota, and attempting to buy through a particular online retailer means that the fare is seemingly no longer available if you immediately switch to, and then try to purchase, through another?

The site has insufficient filtering available for you to specify using LNER only and travelling via Aberdeen. Not many sites do have a suitable amount of filtering.

In this case it appears that it isn't the fastest itinerary travelling via Aberdeen, so it's a tad more complicated.

Most retailers only show itineraries that do not involve 'stepping back'; our site is run by people who put a lot of work into it, to give extra options.

For any given transaction, people have the choice: they can use sites such as LNER, who have access to government subsidies, to entice people to use them, or they can use sites such as ours.

I've done this (it used to work fine, I've done this itinerary a few times) but the LNER website just says the fare isn't available!

Just to clarify, LNER show the obvious itinerary using the next train from Inverurie, the OP has found a cheaper fare involving starting half an hour earlier and waiting in Aberdeen.

Why this is cheaper I have no idea!

(Mind you, I got a very good ticket on Avanti through RUK which I couldn't replicate elsewhere....)

It will be because of availability on the earlier Scotrail service. That much we can tell easily as it is the only difference between the two itineraries.

Sorry I meant to say they won't show itineries that involve stepping back; they also won't show the fastest itinerary if it's not permitted on one ticket (e.g. Leuchars to Glasgow can be quicker via Dundee; LNER won't offer that, but we will)

So, yes they don't consistently show the fastest itineraries and they don't cosistently show the cheapest itineraries.

It can, the point is I want to buy it on LNER so I can take advantage of a discount I have via them.

It’s just bizarre that I can’t buy a fare set by them from them.

No worries - I composed my response to you before I'd seen Mcr Warrior's post (itself replying to my earlier post), in which I think they also made a similar misunderstanding - which looking at the flow of the discussion, probably helped to prompt your misunderstanding! (Blimey, I'm confused having just written all that, and I was trying to be clear in my meaning!)

Sadly it's really not that bizarre that LNER aren't keen to spend money on tooling their website to do something which allows people to get access to cheaper tickets. Most people in these circumstances will simply pay the extra money to take the later train from Inverurie, and that's good enough for LNER.

That will explain why I recently saved £15 on a Shipley-London advance. TrainSplit found the xx38 to Leeds, whereas LNER’s app would only show me the xx45. They both connected into the same LNER train at Leeds.

No apology required! For the avoidance of doubt, the intention was to poke fun at LNER and not you - you consistently provide excellent advice here and I'd believe you if you said LNER were saying the sky is green.
