LNER Class 91/Mk4 service status/withdrawals/2021 refurbishment

Disposal of a 91. Hard to believe how quickly thirty years can zip by. I remember watching this.. (skip to 6:14)

Even the 15 years since I first recall travelling on one seems like an age.

Juding from some of the responses on various threads I'm really not sure that we all did!!

Was that not knowing or choosing not to know though?

At the very least, they've given a fairly good length of service.

I think we all knew it was coming; presumably disposal = scrapping or could someone theoretically buy the shell?

I guess in theory anyone could buy the shell not sure why anyone would want it though

I'd be more likely to buy the shell of a 91 than bid for the free shell of a Pacer

[Roast Veg]

Would make a nice gate guard I suppose

Centrepiece in a pub?

Its been done before.. Hells Kitchen in Castlerea, Ireland has a loco in it!

That's where I got the idea from!

It's certainly the beginning of the end of another era though, the 225 era. How long before a second 91 is withdrawn and so on, as with the HSTs on the GWML, once it's started it flies by and before long it'll be the end of the 91s on the ECML.

[Mordac]

Have they stopped hiring 90s then? I assume they'd have done that before withdrawing any 91s, but sometimes the railway does things in ways that seem strange to those of us looking in.

There'll be plenty of complete locos up for grabs soon in preference to a stripped and grounded body shell if such a thing was desired (Though it strikes me as unlikely).

Yes - the hire-ins stopped about a month ago.

Yes, the last 90 workings were a few weeks ago.

Well it isn't quite a St Paddy and Nimbus moment, but the withdrawal of the first 91 does mark the turning of another page.

And the 91s have had a considerably longer innings than the Deltics.

I'm assuming that 91s will disappear from Leeds turns first. By chance I was on the very first 91 + Mark 4 service from Kings Cross to Leeds back in the day. Perhaps I should make an effort to be on the last?

The 91s are, I believe, unique in that they are the only loco class that the entire fleet has only ever had one pool code (IECA) and been based at Bounds Green since new. The only time they have “troubled the scorers” was when renumbered during their refurbishment. That will change when they are off-leased, of course.

When they put one in the NRM they should put a sound system in it so we can still here the ticks -Wooshers and warning sounds from the multi million mile Electric Loco.

91108 is to be withdrawn tomorrow 22nd July.

It's something I'm surprised they haven't done before and it would be more fitting preserving both loco and those sounds.

At least it's getting some miles in before it goes.

what will happen to 91132 (formerly 91023)

[Ianno87]

what will happen to 91132 (formerly 91023)

Pretty unusual (possibly unprecedented?) circumstances to have been "involved" in two major (fatal) accidents, but unscathed in both and otherwise having a full working career.

yeah, she's either really lucky or unlucky in those cases

Anyone know the schedule for tomorrow on its final day?

[sjpowermac]

Anyone know the schedule for tomorrow on its final day?

LNER Twitter feed says they will send out a tweet on Monday morning about the diagram.

There are three diagrams that start the day at Edinburgh and finish in London:

BN422
05:40 EDB-KGX
11:00 KGX-EDB
16:30 EDB-KGX

BN423
05:48 EDB-KGX
11:30 KGX-EDB
17:00 EDB-KGX

BN424
06:56 EDB-KGX
12:30 KGX-NCL
16:25 NCL-KGX

I must stress, I have zero inside knowledge, so really best to see what LNER put out tomorrow. It’s possible too there might be service alterations today, diagrams often don’t quite work out as planned

[Segedunum]

BN422 would be a fitting end with one last blast on the Scotsman before its retirement...

[sprinterguy]

Interesting to note that 91108 reportedly entered passenger service on 11th March 1989, so has managed just over a full thirty years, and according to LNER has covered 7.6 million miles in that time.

I'd say that it's more than earned its keep at this stage.

Is that the loco that experimented with a double pantograph a while ago?

No, that’s 91114.

Is that the loco that experimented with a double pantograph a while ago?

It's the one that's been in two accidents.

[gimmea50anyday]

Neither of which were caused by the train in any way. Hatfield, when the track shattered underneath the train as it rounded the curves and Heck when it was derailed by the land rover that had fallen off the M62 then collided head on with 66 526.

Just for curiosity's sake and slightly off topic but how does that time and mileage compare to what the Class 87s on the West Coast did? Though they did plenty of mixed traffic working.
