That makes sense in order to reduce the delays incurred. Which yard are they storing them in now? I know there's another yard on the right hand side as you head in the Sheffield direction, the sets having previously been stored on the left hand side. I think the other yard was full of coal wagons last time I went past over a year ago now. Presumably these have been moved and they are using that yard as additional storage?

I've seen a recent photo which shows the yard next to the Sheffield-bound line pretty full with a mixture of complete and incomplete 345's / 710's / 720's.

The fact that recent moves of off-lease sets have seen the loco run round in Doncaster then set off via Maltby means that the set has arrived at Worksop heading east, suggesting the mk4 sets are now being stored in the yard next to the Retford-bound line.

It became the de facto Remembrance locomotive before there was an official one in the shape of a 66. I'm sure some people would see it as disrespectful if it were scrapped.
My point was that there is nothing specific about 91111 that makes it preservation worthy. 91110 and 91131 both have merits about them whereas 91111 just carries a special (and overrated imho) livery.

The livery deserves preservation as one of the cleverest designs to grace our trains, but all previous "remembrance" locomotives have previously gone for scrap so 91111 is no different in that way.

Surely the main factor is what type of owner it is - and LSL is, like WCRC, a commercial charter company.
Surely the main factor is the locomotives themselves ? Those two deltics will inevitably remain preserved because of what they are. Some years ago Harry Needle made a "threat" that "Gordon" would be dismantled and the engines flogged to the NYFD. Obviously it was a windup and the loco has been tarted up and sent to Margate for display indoors. That to me is preserved, even if the Napiers are still in bits at Crewe.

Just because something is old and / or fairly rare doesn't make it 'preserved'. DRS have plenty of locos of a similar age, and nobody would describe them as 'preserved' (apart from the one they hire in from a preservation group - if they still do).

That Margate site seems to be primarily a store for locos awaiting repair, and serving as a low-key museum in the interim (and nothing wrong with that).

Assuming you are talking about 91111 I disagree with the part in bold; the Harry Patch livery and 91110's Battle of Britain guise are both superior designs in my view. A side view of 91111 looks great but the odd shape of the yellow panel on the front end is not particularly clever in my opinion. A high-resolution photo of 91111, viewed bang-side-on, stuck on a wall scaled so the loco is at actual size would be a good way of preserving that livery I feel.

I would be glad to do without the yellow end, but as an ECML regular until March, I always found 91111 a powerful and moving sight.

I expect the files for the artwork still exist - if they really wanted they could get a new vinyl print done from them, and create a lightweight fibreglass replica of the side of a 91 to attach it to..

Picures on the WNXX news site of a number of Mk4s being or about to be scrapped in Hull - including at least one DVT, and there seems to be a buffet there as well, so looks like at least one whole set has gone now in addition to the surplus vehicles from shortened sets.

Incidentally, have they put aside any spare vehicles in case TfW want to lengthen their sets in future?

Scrapping a DVT seems to be a bit short-sighted. Reduces the opportunities for future use of more Mark 4 sets.

But the coaches scrapped were life expired and have no further opportunity for use like a large number of other redundant rolling stock

The ROSCO obviously saw no likely future business for them, but they were not "life expired" - they were perfectly decent coaches in reasonable condition. If the Mk4s were life expired as you claim, they wouldn't be seeing further use with TfW and Grand Central, would they?

There have been so many new trains over the past few years that it's led to scrapping of stock with a good few years' life in it - and there may well be more yet with the glut of perfectly usable EMUs with no planned future use.

With 16 DVTs now spare/off-lease, no sign of anyone else taking them beyond the TfW and Grand Central use and an economic crash that we have not seen the like of in our lifetimes, I'm not understanding that view. It costs to store vehicles - if there is no prospect of re-use then scrapping them is going to avoid the cost.

The coaches in question were some of the poorest condition mk4 vehicles with heavy corrosion, and whilst they could have had heavy repairs/exams to continue in traffic with no need for them it recycling is the most logical solution.

It’s a shame that there isn’t more scope to reuse stock that has more life in it still, both FGW and GC saved many an HST when it didn’t look at all good in the mid 00s at the time when VXC handed them back. Was a wise move for both companies i think.

Dependent on the cost you’d have thought something like the Castle HSTs might have been considered for some Mark 4s and DVTs. However I’d imagine the cost ruled that out pretty quick as I don’t think the 91s would have been suitable for and unlike the Castles it would have had to be an electrified route. Once upon a time I think there was a Manchester to Birmingham XC service, that would be the sort of thing now.

Of course, most Manchester - Birmingham services carry on beyond Birmingham New Street, to destinations without OLE (Bournemouth; no OLE from Coventry to Didcot, and from Southcote Jn onwards, and Bristol TM; no OLE via the Camp Hill Line, from Bromsgrove to Westerleigh Jn, and south of Bristol Parkway).

indeed, but I was referring to the original VXC service which only used to run to Brum.

Back to scrapped stock though: 10310, 11328, 12320 and 82217 (all ex-BN28) have travelled by road to Sims Metals in Hull. 12218 is staying at Worksop as a barrier vehicle.

On Friday last week, 31st July, 3 x Class 91s transferred from Bounds Green to Doncaster, as the latest to be taken out of service - 91115, 91125 & 91132.

I don't think 91132 had operated in passenger service since January. It seems 91115 & 91125 were in use through to the end.

This leaves 12 Class 91s with LNER.

125 was withdrawn around February I think, but was reprieved temporarily following a few failures. I believe the only two left to go at the moment are 91119 & 91124, are there any others?

I read that LNER are keeping 10 x 91s for the time being, so would expect another 2 to be withdrawn in the coming months.

Last I heard, 91111 requires a heavy overhaul and whether or not this will take place with LNER is to be confirmed. I'm not sure if a decision has been made on this yet.

111 has not been in traffic for a while, neither has 110. But both were on the list of 91s to be retained, unlike 91119 & 91124
