Anyone know why there is a 12:38 LNER Azuma from London King’s Cross to Aberdeen calling at Carlisle? Is this to do with problems on the ECML?

Thanks

This happened on September weekends for the past few years and may be an annual diversion. It is an opportunity to travel on the Edinburgh suburban line, although not in today's case.

Trains absolutely packed leaving edinburgh due to this. London passengers travelling to Crewe to get to London or even going via Birmingham

Edit: it seems they are wanting to do engineering works during the week due to leisure travel way above pre Covid levels

No mention of diversions but this is the cause:

Buses will replace trains between Newcastle and Berwick on Wednesday as work is carried out on the rail track.
Network Rail has apologised for the midweek work but said the renewal work was necessary to keep the trains running on the East Coast Main Line.
It said it was being carried out midweek as Fridays and Sundays were the most popular days for people travelling to and from London Kings Cross.
Rail passengers are urged to plan their journey with National Rail Enquiries.
Helen Cavanagh, Network Rail's head of passenger experience for the East Coast, said the company recognised it was "not ideal" for passengers but added it was important to keep trains running.
"We're sorry for the disruption for passengers expecting a train service for their journey," she added.
"The work is being carried out midweek as opposed to on a weekend, to reduce disruption for passengers and impact fewer travellers."

It will mean passengers will have to get off trains on the route on Wednesday between Newcastle and Berwick and travel by bus, lengthening their journey time.
Network Rail said the work would affect the "majority of services between Newcastle and Berwick/Alnmouth and Chathill" until the end of the day.

Don’t think the Suburban line’s strictly necessary unless Haymarket’s also closed

1S13 travels via the suburban today. The only one diverting that way.

Wasn't there some incident North of Newcastle earlier today?

There was issues with the OHL at alnmouth as part of the isolations due to the work. This delayed a few services which had to utilise the emergency generator unit.
The problem has now been sorted.

Thanks for confirming. So, does that mean that there were one or more diverts via Carlisle, some bustitution, and a few delayed services on the thinned out, residual, through workings?

4 scheduled diverts in each direction. A couple delayed north from Alnmouth.
And scheduled bus replacement.

Yeah the overheads kept tripping for a bit.
Incorrect. There was an issue with the isolation of the OHL in connection with the planned engineering work.
This meant the trains could not use electric power to access platform 1.
They were instructed to switch to GU to move into platform 1 and then to shunt to plat 2. That is what caused the delays.

They then implemented the trains to cross over at Little Mills and run into plat 2 where they could operate on electric.
