LNER - Apprentice Train Driver - Leeds & Doncaster (09/05/22)

Hi all,
I have a few questions I hope someone might be able to help with.
I completed my video interview last week and wondered what the time scales are from hearing if you are successful or not?
Following on from that is it generally via email or do they call you for the face 2 face interview?
The face to face interview, any pointers would be great.
If you get past the face to face interview, when would I be likely to get a start date?

Sussex, alot of what you asked is covered already in the lner threads, look at some of my posts for example. The face to face is a "DMi". Tons of information out there on that and questions will be very similar to those in the video interview.

Timescales wise it was 4 months between doing mine and an interview offer.


There is no face to face contact for your interview, its Microsoft Teams.

August and June are the next courses, there should be one in October and likely another in Januaryish.

If I have got right, the 6 scenario based questions are focused only in real scenario as a train driver, and not general scenario outside that, correct ? Also, can you choose to be interviewed only by audio or do they need to see the candidate by video? Thanks!

Seems strange that you would be concerned about being interviewed by video?! How would you deal with face to face interview in this case? You apply for all sorts of positions all over the country, and now you ask a question that would seem to be relative to possibly masking your identity. I may be reading that wrong, and apologise if so, but it does seem a little odd.

Just read on the LNER apprentice driver for Leeds/Kings Cross thread that someone who applied in Jan still hasn't heard back so could be a loooong wait!

Yeah I saw that, but I think they might have slipped through the gap somehow because I'm pretty sure those positions have been filled and everyone is either already on their courses or have dates for when they will be starting.

If you've done the psychometrics and then been offered a medical it means you've passed the testing.

Effectively you have a conditional offer subject to a medical.

Typically you should have had a call to confirm you've beeb successful.

I did have a conditional offer but not call yet . Hopefully soon. Any advice for the course starting in october? They were really impressive about my application and CV, that's why they assess me faster than usual.

How can you have a conditional offer if it takes decades before moving forward to each step and in the meanwhile we would become elderly? I think you are joking pal.

Nothing yet but I know from a previous application to LNER they are good at keeping you in the loop with what’s going on - just takes a while to manually review all those videos.

@TreacleMiller - just a quick question about the 60 minute commute limit - does this carry over into the T&Cs of your contract if you get offered a job? i.e. if you intend to move home at any point, do you have an obligation to let LNER know/still be within that distance?

I’m currently well within the 60min limit but be interesting to know if we were considering moving in the future.

Nothing I've seen says that but I've not seen the full package of terms yet, I won't get that for a week or two.

I currently work for an airline who state you need to be within 90 mins of your base for when youre on standby. Some people who live outside of the 90 mins if wait at services closer to base so they meet that criteria.

Yeah, absolutely agree with you that it makes sense. Interested if it goes into contracts as a specified time period or if they hedge it with “a reasonable distance” or something similar.

I’m same as you, not heard anything this time since the video interview. Last time I applied in January I got a email about 2 weeks after submitting the video saying be patient they have a lot to get through, then less than a week after got a email saying I hadn’t got through to the next stage (which I was expecting as I made a mess of the video interview). This time seems to be taking a lot longer though.

Just to keep people updated, things are definitely progressing with these positions..
I had a DMI last week, found out i passed the next day, now have assessments coming up very soon.. the recruitment team are fantastic, very friendly and helpful, but as said on other posts before, they're working through SO many applications, particularly with overlapping recruitment drives, so just bear with it, things are starting to move along!
