LMS Sentinel locos

Between 1929 & 1932 the LMS/ S&D bought a few Sentinel geared steam locos. Basically, what were they used for?

By 1955 they were based at Crewe South (2), Bath (2), Shrewsbury (1) and Ayr (1).

The Shrewsbury loco was used at Clee Hill. The Bath locos were, I think, outbased at Radstock (for colliery work?).

But what did the Crewe South and Ayr locos do?

The LMS Sentinels could be found in Preston Ayr, Gorton Crewe and Shrewsbury shunting in small yards and works.

At face value five sites for four machines, but I can't help wondering whether "Preston Ayr" is a misunderstood reference to an old name for reclaimed islands in the River Ribble / Preston harbour complex, just like Lancaster has Green Ayre and Salt Ayre. In which case presumably one shunted Preston docks???

Wiki says 7164 was at Crewe works, while 47190/1 worked the Radstock colliery lines

Walmsley (Part One) only gives one loco at Gorton for two very short periods, so possibly standing in for another loco. He doesn’t list one as being at Preston.

Yes, in Part Four. Ayr had just one from the start of the data in 8/50 to 2/56.

According to “BR Steam Locomotives (Complete Allocations History) 1948-1968”:

47180 was allocated to Preston for two periods: March-May 1949, and September-November 1950.

47182 was allocated to Ayr from January 1948 until it’s withdrawal in 1956.

One of Ivo Peter's books has a picture of a sentinel plus another of the low bridge that prevented normal LMS tank engines getting to colliery sidings in the Radstock area.

Presumably it refers to former Croydon Gasworks 37, works number 7109, which is similar to the two S&DJR locos and is (or was) preserved at Midsomer Norton. It was never owned by the S&DJ, LMS or BR.

47180/81/83/84 all spent periods at Sutton Oak. I was once told that they were hired to local factories with sidings.

47183 was allocated to Sutton Oak, when in BR stock, from Jan 48 to Jan 49.
