LMS (?) Oil Can

This was found floating in the river Tame near Delph sometime in the mid-70s and has just turned up in a relative's attic. I think I've seen a picture somewhere of a driver oiling round a locomotive using something similar. Can anyone say if it is genuine LMS or it's just been stencilled with a marker pen or some such?

Possibly railway as drivers and others did use such long feed oil cans for locomotives or in workshops. However,they were also used in many other industries. As for the LMS stencil I personally think that’s been added later.

I remember seeing my dad with one of these for a lawnmower... he's probably still got it in his garage somewhere ( the can, I mean ).

It's quite possible the LMS could simply be the initials of whoever owned it at some point?

My dad had one too - for his mower!

If this was ex LMSR, I'd guess it would be more likely that the initials would be embossed or stamped into the metal rather than just painted on the side.
