So alright, we have seen some pretty stupid and far fetched rail scenarios in soap land....

BBC trying to make us believe the Northern Line suddenly goes through East London, and that Bromley-by-bow and Barking are suddenly planted underground !!!

But surely tonights attempt by ITV, to make us think a crappy old Northern Rail Sprinter / Pacer (from an obvious Manchester VICTORIA rather than Picc) would be on a LONDON Euston service... is just dam laughable....

Actually there is a shocking thought... Manchester to London on a pacer !!! :o :o :o To be fair, Manchester to Stockport on one is FAR too long !!!

You will probably find the average soap fan isn't bothered or interested in such rail related inaccuracies.

Hmm I wonder if fictional TV shows would take the same approach to air-travel related scenes... i.e. would they try to fool us that someone is flying to New York on a Bombardier Dash 8 for example ??

I noticed that although I didn't get the station swap lol.

When she was buying her tickets I've never heard of anyone asking when you were coming back! Just if it's a single or return

I like the sound of that. Manchester to London on a pacer! Surely better than the current offering!!!

I myself, was having a chuckle at that! Perhaps Picadilly management refused to have them filming at said station???

I think you're being too harsh on the humble pacer. From a passengers point of view, I would much prefer it than a dirty 150 that Northern seem to like.

It also left from Platform 2, an east facing bay platform. So first stop Stockport - how? Reversing just before Staylbridge to go via Denton? :)

It was definitely a 150/2. Interesting that they really did put the 15.55 details up on the platform indicator - it was clearly readable in the elevated shot as the train pulled out.

But did any of you spot the other big laugh? She made clear that she was getting a train at 4 o'clock ( yes, the 15.55 is close enough ) and later on she said "Toyah is meeting me at Euston" and a bit after that "She's not meeting me until 6 so I'll only be hanging around ages anyway!"

So... blimey... those 150/2s can't half shift, especially considering they aren't even taking a direct route...!!:roll::lol::roll::lol:

Perhaps Northern have at long last cleaned them, thus releasing them of all that grime and dirt from the exterior so making them much more aerodynamically more efficient and hence the quick journey time to London

Depends if the show is set in Buffalo or something! It'd be quite plausible then....!

In all fairness, I was impressed with some of their attention to detail. She was catching the 4 o'clock train to London. She got the 15:55 (which is close enough to be 4 o'clock by lay person standards). The calling pattern was realistic and remained consistent. The train departed from the right platform.

The fact that they got the wrong station and used a Northern service was bearable; you didn't see much of the train, and ITV just have to live within the confines of what they can and cannot do. If Virgin won't let them film their services (which seems a bit silly to me), or they can't get into Piccadilly station, you've just got to live with that and do the best with what you've got. And most people wouldn't be able to tell you which station is used for London services unless they were a local rail traveler themselves. Of course, I'd be disappointed if they just used Northern because it was a bit cheaper (and given that they've spent a ridiculous amount of money demolishing the street and rebuilding it, cost cutting is going to have to happen somewhere).

Perhaps the producers of Constipation Street arranged a product placement deal with Northern to raise a few £££'s; IIRC the law changed recently on product placement and it is now acceptable.

Don't think that is true, as in BBC1s Hustle, they walked into Euston, boarded a 390, sat in a 390 first class, had VT breakfast served by VT staff and got off at Piccadilly! Needless to say, my mouth jaw was touching the floor :shock::shock:

Its NR who issue permits for Piccadilly, maybe Northern were more willing to accommodate plus if Northern can spare a unit at the time of filming - remember that they often film rail scenes early on a Sunday morning to avoid interfering with normal travelers (or normal travelers interfering with the filming!)

Unless she got the 16:15 on an advance ;)

BBC and ITV are different companies. Negotiations could have broken down.

I think they got away with it by not showing much of the train, and actually showing quite a bit of attention to detail elsewhere (eg the departure boards and announcements).

I'd be very surprised if they did; you'd hardly notice the Northern branding at all. If they were going for product placement
  1. They wouldn't use Northern, as Northern don't provide any such service!
  2. They'd have made a bigger deal of it I think

They might not go that far, but the number of times planes clearly change between shots is very high. Also when it comes to planes, filming of real planes or real airports is very rare. Most of the time you see the person going through the gate (in the studio) then onboard a mock up section of a plane (also in the studio) with some stock footage of planes taking off, landing and flying thrown in. At best you might get some actual filming in the airport, usually around the enterance and the public areas.

Believe it or not it isn't all that far fetched. According to Rail Express magazine, on 25th January, 142001 worked the 06.30 Exeter - Paddington (albeit only as far as Bristol TM).

Which isn't as bad as it would appear, London passengers were accommodated on the following HST while the pacer collected from intermediate stations between Exeter and Bristol as the HST was taking the Westbury Route

When Sarah left they did film her and Jason at Piccadilly.

While Leanne must have decided against going in case she could reach an understanding with Peter, it did occur to me that maybe the reason to quote Leanne that "I just couldn't go" could have been that she simply did not believe it was the right train!

It's all pretend guys :D

My Dad (a now retired firefighter) used to pick holes with "Londons Burning". Personally I think that the recent BBC Documentary "Come Fly with Me" had the airlines down to a tee ;)

frankly i think that tv programmes be them soaps or not, should at least attempt to get facts like this right. this is just typical of TV companies, when they want to depict rail travel they just chuck any old train in there, thinking no-one will notice exept quite a few people as this thread shows. personally i loled at the tram crash as the cgi and the physics were laughable.

I absolutely agree! I worked for an airport outlet and the check in girls' bitching, effeminate male cabin crew, and most other aspects of airport operation were spot on, down to the witless passengers <D

FlyGlobespan were an utterly horrendous airline, and while it is unfortunate that staff lost their jobs, the industry is better off without them.

"this flight is Dublin to Barcelona, but with a coach transfer from Shannon"]

They'd do it if they could get away with it.

Back to the main point, I was mystified at the sight of what appeared to be the 'London' train worked by a sprinter. Didn't notice it was victoria as opposed to piccadilly, not familiar enough with them to notice. Apart from the hyper-driven Sprinter (Manchester-London in less than 2 hours?!) to the layman it would have appeared to be accurately depicted.

I only saw this tonight, and I immediately told my housemate that Leanne was at Victoria and not Piccadilly (she said I was sad ). The thing is though, Manchester to Euston uses Pendos, whereas they chose a station that has no electrified NR line (unless Bury counts!) at all. And all that on a 156? Last I checked, 156s were a fantasy south of the A14.

Does it actually matter whether they used the right train or station?

One thing that annoyed me though, was on a programme, based near Manchester(?) and basically this guy took a girl on a date train spotting (ikr?) from a car. Now, they were sat in a car, and a EWS 66 rolls past with coal hoppers. The guy says 'ah a class 60 with binliners to Scunthorpe'. :|

Now, they must have done some research to find out what a class 60 was, binliners etc, so why not do it on the right train?!?!

The doors were 1/3 and 2/3 so it was a 150/2, not a 156 surely?

Were they? I only noticed the seating. My bad...

You could tell something was up though, because they *always* go to Piccadilly, and it is never shown. It is usually at the end of the episode...

Kinda soppy, wasn't it?

Some of my staff do if the passenger is doing a long distance trip..
