I applied for the London Midland Senior Conductor roles around about 7 or 8 months ago, I made it to interview shortly after I was told there where no vacancies left for my area of choice (Birmingham new street/snow hill),

I was told as soon as vacancies arise in my chosen area that I was on the list and would not have to retake tests,Interview etc again.

Anyone else in the same position? How likely is it for me to be contacted in September when there next recruitment for West Midlands will be they say?

I went through all of that, and even went for a Medical. They told me they'd contact me in April. Not only is it now May and I've heard nothing, but they've recently re-advertised for conductors at 2 of the 5 depots I was being considered for. Make of that what you will.

I applied for the new vacancy - take it that it could be a while before I start to hear anything...?

I haven't had a medical either but that's the easy bit I don't think it's right for them to tell people there first in line for a job if they have no intention of taking them on?

Surely the talent pool so to speak saves them the time and effort of advertising jobs , holding assessments and so on.

Anyway fingers crossed

Still gutted I missed the trainee drivers jobs for lm in west mids

Have you contacted them? Nothing wrong with asking if they have any vacancies for you and reminding them you are still interested.

There is a chance that they have forgotten/lost details if people who applied before...

i was in the same position as many of you , a very long process from start to finish , fortunately i started on the last course

i think there is another course starting at the end of may and then another a couple months after , from what ive gathered there will be more

i understand that its frustrating as i was exactly the same but in the defence of my employers this whole recruitment has been a massive work in progress and will continue for sometime

those who have had their medical i would assume that there is a place for you , the bupa days are not cheap , if i can offer any advise from my own experience
is call them and ask questions , i kept calling and calling and emailing untill im sure that they were sick of me :D but be pro active !! if you got through the shift , the interview and medical youve done the hard bit

a few people ive spoken to on my course didnt know untill the last minute where they stood as it were

keep plugging away , make those calls , its worth it

Railway HR is shocking, it truly is. 1000s of people apply for railway jobs, especially traincrew roles and get treated awfully in some cases. Get in touch with the recruiting TOC's and explain what has happened and what you were told. Tell them you were in the talent pool and haven't applied for other companies as you were expecting employment and was showing loyalty.

Unfortunately it's the way the world works. Currently it goes in the companies favour. If they advertise a job they know they will be flooded. They don't need to be over friendly or helpful as they know that people need the job more than they need the applicants. If hundreds apply for 3 positions then HR are in a good position-they could literally have candidates jumping through hoops as there are few other jobs out there at the moment.

If the jobs market picks up substantially then it will be the other way around-companies will have to 'beg' people to come and work for them.

The housing market is similar in the rental sector. Landlords have dozens of applicants for a single property so can choose who they want, can charge more and rental agreements can be more in their favour. If things change then landlords will need to attract tenants by lowering rent, changing terms to meet the tenant etc.

I suppose the whole railway is like that though-the passengers certainly need the railway more than the railway needs the passengers. The commuters aren't ere out of choice, they don't pay a quarter of their salary to stand on an overcrowded late running train with poor info in disruption because they choose to, they do it as it is the only practice way to get to work!

Pardon me if I'm speaking out of turn, but some of those on here that have applied and heard nothing, or passed all the tests and been told they're on the waiting lists for certain depots - have you tried ringing LM?? As people have said in the past, they know they will be flooded with applicants, so aren't bothered if they know they can get as many people as they want/need.
If you phone them, one of two things will happen. (personal experience speaks here, mind) Either they will move you onto the next stage if you let them know what stage you are at and where you have got to so far. Or they'll send you the "Dear John" letter/e-mail that we all dread. That's the top and bottom of it, folks.
Don't umm and arr, pick up the phone, speak to someone, find out exactly where you are at.
Keep your name fresh in their heads. Once I met the HR ladies at HQ, they were pleased to be able to put a face to the name and the voice they'd heard on the blower several times.
The number for HR at LM has been published several times on here, so phone these people. If you've phoned them and they've sent you a "Dear John", then yes, come on here and moan about how incompetent you think they are.
I can assure you that almost all HR departments I've dealt with within the railways are exactly the same. I should know, it took me 15 years to get myself in the position I find myself in today, sending out at least three applications a year to various TOC's.

Any HR department that spends thousands of pounds putting people through medicals before they even know how many people they're going to recruit is incompetent. If that company then either loses or forgets about these people, and spends more money recruiting yet more people on top, it is even more incompetent. There is no other word for it.

i would have to disagree to a point , they know exactly how many people they require ,its completely evident when youve gone through the process and see it from the other side , however i do think they could be a little more forth coming with letting people know where they stand

as plastictaffy has said keep phoning , we both did and i believe it helped , i called so much i thought i may have done too much  but if they remember you , if you can build a rapport with someone there it can do you no harm

I have explained before how recruitment works, but I guess I'll do it again.
Out of all the applicants, most companies that do assessments for their jobs aim to lose a a half to two thirds at assessment.
Then another half to three quarters at interview stage.
Then another 10 to 20 percent at the medical stage - either they don't turn up, or they fail it.
Then another small amount will fail the CRB, or their employers give them a crap reference.
So, if, say, 500 apply, by the time the positions are unconditionally offered, there will only be maybe 75 applicants left. But if there are only, say, 30 positions available, then it's a given that some will be out of luck. The point I am making really, is that if you've got through all of the above hoops, and they've put you on hold, then you clearly meet the criteria for the job.
So surely phoning them to let them know you're still alive, haven't emigrated, and still want the job really is the way forward??
Why would they bother sending out a conditional offer letter to you if they're not sure you still want the job?? They've not heard from you since you filled in the application forms, so why would they waste the time and postage sending a a letter to someone that may not even still want the job??
Anyway, maybe I'm missing the point, but if it was me, I'd be on the horn asking them if my application is still live!! "Hello, I put an application form in last year, you told me I'd been put on hold pending a position, but now you're re-advertising. Does this mean I've been unsuccessful??"
They'll either move you on, or send you a "Dear John", like I said. At least then you'll know.

How are the T's+C's some of the worst out there?? Mine seem alright!! I worked in a warehouse for 10 years, and at my last job, they truly were rubbish!!
The salary is the best money I have ever earnt, plus what you can make elsewhere.
Yes, sunday working is in the contract, but if you don't want them, they are easy enough to get rid of, there's a good chance someone else will work them. Okay, yes, if you can't lose them, and they can't cover the job, they'll pull contractual on you, but when you only have a black ink Sunday 11 weeks out of 36, I don't think that's so bad.
You get 4 block weeks of annual leave a year - one in winter, 2 in summer, and one in autumn. If you want to move them, that's no problem either, as long as there's a vacant block. Then you get floating days for you to take when you like.
You get a long weekend every three weeks built into the roster, (which is a 4 day week - did I mention that??) which means every three weeks you get Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon and Tue off.
They also do a final salary pension scheme - rare as rocking horse s**t these days.
If they expect you to work away from your home depot, they pay you travel time.
We get discount at a lot of Merlin Attractions, (although, to be fair, my wife works for a supermarket chain, who give a heavier discount than being an LM staff member gets you) discount with Orange, discount on Citroen cars. (I'd never buy one, but that's beside the point)
You also get free travel on your own company, (and companies that the parent company of your TOC owns) which is applied to your wife or civil partner, and your children til age 16. That free travel also entitles you to get quarter fare on all other TOC's, too.

So, explain to me exactly how the T's + C's are the worst for Conductors of any TOC??

As has been pointed out before, railway recruitment is the same with any TOC. Friend of mine got a job with FGW a few years ago as a Trainee Driver (he drives HST's now, lucky git) and he was on hold for that for nearly 18 months. It was only a chance conversation with someone that made him phone them to see what had happened with his application, right on the day they put out a new advert for Trainee Drivers. I have also had experience of applying for various other TOC's, and had much the same experience as a lot of people on here have been having.
Applied for London Underground, didn't even get a "Dear John".
Applied for FCC, their recruitment department wouldn't return the calls I made when requesting an update from them.
Virgin never acknowledged receipt of my electronic application form.
DRS's online application system didn't even work properly.

A touch of sour grapes on craigybagels' behalf, maybe...........

Ah, you see, I'm not based in West Midlands!! I'm West Coast - it's a bit different down there. They are ex-Central, and during the "Harmonisation" they were kept on the Central contracts, I understand that this was something to do with the the staff voting on things like contracted sundays, and commission.

So the fact that they get what they get in the West Midlands is down to themselves, as far as I see it - although if I'm wrong, I'll happily be corrected!!

At my place, most of them are ex-Silverlink, and a good few more still have the T's +C's from their BR days!! From what I've been told, it's only those of us that have been given jobs since London Midland have taken over that have the contracts we do - as in booked sundays and the like.

You're saying bad things about LM, in fairness, I've not heard great things about Virgin either!! Think it must just be the way things work in the industry.

Thanks Komma. I did think you were ok, but I can change my mind. How's the training going? I've nearly finished now. Pass out on Friday. Just going to have to do plenty of overtime and Sunday's to catch up with you lot. :D

Because, SJN, I'm fatter, and therefore need to eat more to keep this racing snake figure I have. I'm assuming, craigybagel, that you are based at a rather large station right in the middle of the country, that's currently having a rebuild?? That's the limit of what we sign, so it must be there or thereabouts.......
Personal experience tells me that a lot of the TM's with Virgin seem to be a bit up themselves. Must be because they work on trains that really smell rather odd. They seem to think they're a bit better than Guards on other TOC's. I went out for a smoke at Euston a couple of weeks ago - said hello, as you do, and they just turned their backs to me!!! Says it all really. I think I'd had a wash that day, so it can't be that!!

After a few emails to London midland recruitment they told me I'm number 71 on the list ...

There is an intake for west kids region in September 2013 , jan 2014 and march 2014 with a grand total of 32 positions...

Basically I don't stand a chance , just wish they told me that last year

I'm a bit further away from that station actually (we only have retail and first class lounge staff there - all the platform work is done by Network Rail). Sounds like you won't be signing my place but at least a small amount of your colleagues, either at your depot or another one near by do sign my place in addition to various West Mids depots, though I'd rather not say more than that publicly.

I will say though that unless there is more than one former photographer turned Virgin staff at Euston who live near Watford, I also know who Komma is, I trained with him, and if he can work out who I am he'll tell you I'm not one of the "Virgin is better than everyone else" brigade <D

Is that "Potato" by any chance.
