Unfortunately, Maps has stopped.
Just on the off-chance while nosing to see about trainee Driver jobs again, I see London Midland are looking for Guards.
Closing date is the 7th December, so quickly!!

Vacancies are in locations as follows, Coventry, Crewe, Leamington Spa and Watford. Testing will be done on Saturday the 13th up at 102.

Looks like LM recruitment hold is over for conductors and drivers then, new drivers starting soon and now this.......good news for those looking for a new role in 2015

Almost all external too on this December intake, first big external intake for a good while. It'll be interesting to hear how they get on.

started my railway career with LM as a guard and can safely say that anyone who manages to get a position with them will be so much better for it!! they are a great company to work for and they really do look after their staff!....if it wasn't for my location I'd go back and work for them tomorrow!

Interesting in what way? Would you say they are at any particular disadvantage being 'off the street'?

You can't have worked for the same London midland as me then! I was there from day 1, how they treated us was outrageous! Do you recall the xmas of 08 new yr of 09 ? Traincrew sickness aka we couldn't be arsed to recruit so we'll blame it on the plebs ?

If left for amother TOC three years ago, I would never go back !

I passed the first lot of the new tests with them,only to wait ages to be told there's a hold on external recruitment for trainee drivers.
Let's hope they bear me in mind if they start recruiting again and don't have to start from square one.

yes i was there and in my first year but i was there long enough to know that it certainly wasn't just the company taking the mick!.....in relation to the sickness that you're referring to there were loads of people who were purely swinging the lead with sickness and accommodations and not giving a monkey's about their colleagues who had to pick up the slack! yes i remember the xmas and new year when i was on double time etc (rubbing hands with glee)

the company did make mistakes yes and were a bit tight at times in terms of the recruitment but if i remember rightly wasn't that also the year the recession started to hit?(could be wrong) if so recruitment probably wasn't high on their agenda! i had the type of comments you just gave when i was applying as well but all i can say is it's a good job i didn't listen else i probably wouldn't have my driving job now!

it's a matter of opinion obviously and i cannot fault them and i am grateful in terms of what they did for me! only people i ever saw treated with a heavy hands there were the people that loved to stick their heads above the parapet every 2 mins and spent more time whingeing about work others had than what they had themselves! totally self inflicted but hey ho i didn't work at every depot they had i can only go on the experience i had which was perfectly fine! each to their own! yes there may be better companies to work for etc but there is far worse out there to work for!

Only the obvious really. There's a hell of a lot to learn and figure out for yourself if you aren't already familiar with the rule book and the environment, don't have any experience of how the railway actually work in reality and haven't had the opportunity to witness and learn from other peoples/your own incidents and mistakes before you get in the hot seat yourself.

For me personally, I would not want to become a Driver having come completely 'off the street' with no prior railway experience. It'd just be too steeper hill to climb comfortably, it'd be daunting to me. That's why I respect anyone who does it.

for a long time you had a major advantage coming 'off the street' mate especially through the recession where if there was any recruiting to be done it would almost certainly be external rather than having to pay twice for an internal, their training and their replacement!

i remember being told by a senior management figure within my toc that at the present time I'd stand a better chance of getting a driving position by resigning as a conductor completely and applying 'off the street' how mad is that?....gotta appreciate the honesty if nothing else!

I'm actually glad there has been a big focus on internal promotions over the past few years as we were neglected in those terms for a long time!

having got into a driving grade from an already operational role i can certainly say it is a BIG help having already been around the environment for a few years and getting to know how the signalling works and the slang etc! i thought it was hard enough training as a guard 'off the street'! hats off to anyone that goes straight into driving 'off the street'

These Conductor vacancies seem to have been taken down from the LM site, so hopefully people will hear back soon as the assessments are in a weeks time!

Applied in the nick of time for the Leamington Spa vacancy! Concerned I haven't heard anything either way though yet? Surely they'll have to push back the dates of the assessment if they haven't told anyone yet though?

Take it from someone who's been through the process. They are not the quickest and will pay little attention to original deadlines. If you are successful I look forward to meeting you in about 5 months!

Little bit of insider information on this. Watford depot is (including the sick, lame and lazy) about 4 short. Out of a depot of 16, that's too many. There is a guy who wants to transfer to Bletchley (taking my vacant line, as I transfer on Sunday) but because Watford is soooo short, his transfer won't be authorised until May. I would imagine the start date, going on the timetable change being in may, to be around February/March time.

LM (railways generally, truth be told) will not do anything quickly, it'll all be in their sweet time. It won't hurt to ring them once a month or so after the assessments/interview, just to let them know that you haven't emigrated and do still want a job. A lot of upheaval has gone on, which has left the HR department painfully short of bodies.

Whatever happens, you'll hear nowt for weeks/months while they decide, then sort all the paperwork and the like out.

Best of luck to those of you in the running - I think you'll get to like it here!!

At Watford,we have had 4 new starters this year and all 16 positions are taken.At one stage we had 18 guards this year,as one went driving and the other transferred to Northampton,we are now back to 16.
You are right that one is waiting on a transfer to Bletchley,but at this moment in time only one person is on light duties,due to medication and they are due back to work trains next week.
With no Abbeys at the moment even if we were soooo short(which we are not),we have enough spares to cover all jobs.I should know this,as I have had bugger all RDW over my long weekend.

Wonder what the shifts are like at Leamington Spa?! Only a few LM services from there a day!
