Ticket checks are part of their service conditions regardless of the route, but it isn't always practical or possible to do them, although I agree it is very rare to see them on the Cross-City at all even if you're sat outside the cab. Sunday isn't part of the working week, the contracted hours are 37hrs a week working 4 days between Mon-Sat and 2 consecutive rest days. If you work a Saturday that is a rest day you get paid at time and a quarter rate, if you work Sunday it is paid at time and a half rate. I'd you don't work any overtime then every 3 weeks your rest days and Sunday combine to make a 5 day long weekend off Fri-Tue. Shifts will start anywhere between 4am start to a 1am finish (depends on the depot) I'd imagine, so living local or having your own transport is helpful.
