I have just booked from New St to Stafford using the LM website and obtained their discount but the trains I thought I might use turn out to be XC services but I went ahead and selected them and the confirmation email says it is ok to use those trains.
As this is an LM discount how am I allowed to use the tickets on XC trains.

The short answer is that London Midland are the lead operator for the Birmingham to Stafford flow, so any fares set by them have to be accepted by the other operators on that route.

The Sale section on LM's website clearly states that if the routeing on your ticket is 'Any Permitted' you may use any operator.
