Hail All!
As it happens, I have family living in the town that I visit occasionally, and thus I've been using the station on-and-off for the last 25 years!

hock:
Although it's not particularly well served nowadays (Although todays service is
much better than the four trains a day that called there back in 1996CE!) it's still a much quicker route to the mainland than walking along the strait and over Y Pont Menai. Indeed...It also used to be a damn good place for spotting 15x's and HSTs flying off of Y Pont Brittania before they bought those blasted Class 221 Foragers in! 8)
Aye, I agree that the platforms are a
little short there, having once gotton my doors mixed up and having to cess-walk 50 yards to get to the platform after alighting! :razz:
Mind ye though, I suppose that's a practical use for the name of the town itself. If the town was simply called "Llanfair" (
Church of the Fair, implying
St. Mary's Church) then the platforms would've only been built about 12ft long...And it'd be a reet bugger for DMU drivers nowadays to get the doors lined up properly with the platform!

hock:
Well...Surrounded mostly by housing on the
Northern side of the station! Unless things have changed significantly there in the past 14 months, the south side of the station only has a bunch of fields and the 100Kv Nat Grid feed from Wylfa! :razz:
The thing that always strikes me as strange when thinking of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogeryrchwyrndrobwillllantysiliogogogoch though is that - When translated from the Cymraeg - The town's name reveals itself to actually be a
sentance describing the towns location and religious installations. Surely calling the town "St. Mary's Church" (Thus shortening it to just "Llanfair") would've been easier?
Although I wouldn't change the name now - Especially given it's important status as one of the World's longest place names - I must admit that I get a bit peeved off with it at times. Even if I'm sending a simple "thank you" letter or birthday card to my family there, I still have to use a four-foot long envelope just to accommodate the address!

hock::roll:
