I will be travelling from Llandudno Junction to Derby and back the same day this Saturday purchasing an off peak day return.

Which of the following routes are valid when reaching Chester?
Chester-Crewe-Derby
Chester-Manchester-Sheffield-Derby
Chester-Stockport-Sheffield-Derby
Chester-Crewe-Tamworth-Derby

Are there any other possibilities?

The off peak day return has a restriction code B5 - anyone know what this means?

It’s quite a convoluted journey this Saturday as there are rail replacement buses between Llandudno Junction and Rhyl!

Thanks!

B5 is not valid before 0830 Mon-Fri, but as you are travelling at the weekend, there are no time restrictions.

If the forum's ticketing site offers an itinerary with splits turned off, it's a valid route.

Before using the forum's ticketing site, you may want to use www.fastjp.com for a fast itinerary only planner, to generate the optimal route with whatever via/avoid points you desire. The forum's ticketing site uses the FastJP journey planner, so once you know the via/avoid points to generate the journey you wish, you can replicate these on the forum's site (using the 'advanced' options).

For via, you can optionally force calling at, or changing at.

For avoid, you can optionally force do not call at, or do not change at.

You can also specify to either only include operators of your choice, or to exclude operators of your choice.

From the routeing guide, maps (https://rgpp.iblocks.co.uk/maps)
  • CH + EM
  • JG + PR
  • JO + PR
  • MJ + PR
  • NJ
  • NJ + TV
show permitted routes for “any permitted” tickets between Llandudno Junction and Derby.

Restriction codes can be looked up at, for example, https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket-types/validity/b5/
Thanks, but what do the abbreviations mean?

Presumably I can travel outward via Manchester/Chesterfield and return via Crewe?

The off peak day return ticket states via any permitted route?

Look at the link I provided, which shows the maps which show the routes.

They also show the routes you originally mentioned, you can go via Manchester and back via Stoke and Crewe, yes. And your ticket is “any permitted”, yes.

You asked for all the possibilities, which is why I gave you the complete list.
