Passenger usage at this station has gone up by a considerable amount, I know this because I looked at Wikipedia. 2006/07 = 38,000, 2007/08 = 50,000. When they fix the passing loops on this line will they be adding extra trains on this route, even if its an extra evening service from llandrindod to Craven Arms.

Knighton must suffer quite badly on this line, I never stay too long here because I have to Travel back to Chester. From Knighton to shrewsbury the departure times are 16.15 and 21.15, which I think is appauling to be honest, Knighton would benefit from an extra evening train which could be the one from Llandrindod which could be a limited stop service calling at Knighton, Craven Arms and Church Stretton Only before reaching Shrewsbury.

Overcrowding won't happen for at least 20 years- if ever.

I assume this wasn't meant to be taken literally?

Each platform could hold around 150 people. There is never going to be a time when that many people are waiting for one train, at the same time, on the same platform.

Theoretically:

If we assume that 5 trains a day operate in each direction (m-sa)

In total that's 10 trains. Say every time a train is due, the platform is at max capacity. That's 150 passengers (per train, per direction, from this station) so that's 1500 passengers a day.

Over a year 547,500 passengers can use the station without it being overcrowded. Put that in comparison with 50,000 journeys currently.

Also, the 50,000 is the number of journeys that start/finish at Llandidrod. Not the number of passengers. Regulars will get on/off the train once a day, 5 days a week. So each person actually uses the station 10 times a week, (twice a day). So on that theory, only 5000 individual people a year use the station. A very rough calculation, but makes the point.

but what im saying is if there were more trains then more people would use it, at the moment you cant guarante getting home the same day or spending long enough at your destination.

and that single carriage train tey use is pathetic, u cant see out of the windows, i always have to stand up from shrewsbury to knighton where every1 gets off anyway. ok sometimes im lucky to get a seat if people get of at church s, and craven a.

at some points on the line they could get away with closing 2 stations and building 1 in the middle of them, it would quicken up the journey. dont forget people only use this line to go to church stretton, craven arms, knighton, llandrindod and maybe llandovery.

What units would you suggest?

Any 15x series has the same sort of windows.

The train in question is a class 153, which is effectively half of a 155/156. (a 2 carriage version).

Class 175s are overkill- and are needed elsewhere on the network.

Unfortunately, yes, more services would probably lead to increased usage. This line will never be profitable though. So there's no incentive to make any improvements.

class 153 would be ideal,

class 153 and class 150 should all be scrapped

the class 150 are appauling and in such a state that when i was at Holyhead, one of these came in for the next service but I waited an extra 30 mins for the virgin one.

class 153 are not suitable and i dont know why they use these trains to be honest, you cant even see out of the window, i also have the same problem on the conwy valley line, i would like to see the scenery. arriva actually use these trains in the summer, and they cant cupple 2 of these together either because they only have 8 of these units.

extra sunday services were put in place to aberystwyth to meet with demand, mind you it was needed.

I think your getting a little confused with train types.

Class 150s dont operate up to Holyhead, mainly in/around South Wales, Wrexham and Blaneau Ffest.

Class 158,175,221,57+390,57+mk2 operate up there...

I have friends at Llandovery, down the line from Llandod, or two passing places later, ATW have stated no extra, trains,or carriages on this line with one exception, the 4 day Royal Welsh Show in July, when a rake of 158s travels up from Cardiff & return. Also I dont see WAG forking out for any more trains on the line as the Minister is obsessed with his beloved WAG EXPRESS.

Another problem is the fact that 2 passing loops are now out of action thanx to network rail and wont be fixed til 2010, meaning that its a struggle even to operate the present service although the single line section through gowerton is another problem.

There are plans to have the heart of wales services increased to every 2 hours using class 150's and extend the service to crewe, effectively interworking the heart of wales services with the 2 hourly shrewsbury - crewe stopping service.

I know the heart of wales line is very popular especially during the summer where i believe all of the trains should be at least 2 carriages, i believe the number of passengers has also increased since bus pass holders could get free travel along the line.

There has been a report on the heart of wales line which i will have a look for

I'm sure everybody on this forum would love to see the type of train Merseyrail run on a Holyhead to Crewe run!!!

You're getting confused. Merseyrail trains are class 507/508 trains that run of an electric 3rd rail. They're bright yellow and silver and have been refurbished to a reasonably high standard.

Now the 150 was seen a couple of years ago, I do recall seeing yellow painted
merseyrail DMUs around Chester, prior to Northern taking over, these were not third rail.

Also the young man who puts in threads from the Conwy Valley, said he
travelled on a 150 ATW from Cardiff to Junction, the 150 he said then went on to Holyhead. Quoted as saying it was awful, Also fellow members of
SCURA report 150s prowling out of area, in Wrexham they use them to connect with VT as a stopper to Shrewsbury Mon Fri at around 8.45p.m
and also in the morning to connect with VTs 0700 Wrexham to Euston.
I am sure this 150 is off the Bidston line in the p.m. But they do prowl.
Couple of years ago they even had valley lines painted on 150s on the
Birm to Chester run.

Erm? No its NR's fault that there are no extra trains, as 3 out of the 5 passing loops are out of action, which means that capacity is restricted! The How CRP has said that there is a plan for a 5th day return, but its do with finding an extra unit to do that 5th day return thats the problem!

Right, there has been a merseyrail branded class 150- just very very long ago (1980s). There is a Network Rail one- but not a merseyrail pte branded one any longer.

Secondly, I didn't call anyone a liar. The OP said a Merseyrail unit was in Holyhead. Impossible!! Even a DMU, unless it was a class 142 pacer then you are clearly mistaken!
A 507/508 has never been on the N.Wales coast! You said the type of train Merseyrail use. Ok, at a push it's a 142, (unlikely), but as Merseyrail don't have any (branded or of their own) 150s,156s,158s etc.

I was in Llandovery last October, the passing loop was working on a Sunday,
back again in February this year, the passing loop not used, I posted pics
on the North Wales rail noticeboard, still there I think.
Anyhow its all to do with funding for the 5th train, some how I dont see
Ieuan Wyn Jones handing out any more dosh.
From Oct to 2010 I understand the line is free to locals who have the All Wales bus pass & live in Carmathen & Powys Counties.

Also thanks for the confirmation that 150s did & do run between Cardiff
and Holyhead as you stated,

you are missing the point! He said that like the one that merseyrail used to use. Well if he made a mistake about that, there is no need to go on about 507s/508s and take the p***. There was a merseyrail 150, and it was actually in the 90s. He didnt say it was a merseyrail 150, it was probably an ATW 150. But it was LIKE the merseyrail 150 because it was the same train type!
