Living Within An Hour

Is it worth applying for a job at the opposite end of the country which requires me to live within 1 hour of the location I'm applying for?

I'll make it very clear that I plan to relocate, but would they just throw the form in the bin?

The vacancy in question is with Cross Country, but I'd love an answer for every TOC

Depends on the company I suppose.

I do know someone who applied for a job in London (living near me, S. Wales), stated he would relocate and got an interview.

I applied for a job with Network Rail in London, when I lived in the middle of rural Ireland!
I made it abundantly clear that I was soon moving back to England, and not only got an interview, I got the job.

I heard Virgin are happy for people to re-locate.
East Midlands trains on the other hand throw it in the bin, despite you writing many times you would be happy to relocate.

Southern and SWT also seem to ignore this as well, it seems that they won't accept anyone out of the timed area (even if they say they would relocate!)

I was very nearly successful with First Scotrail as a guard at Perth depot, the only reason I was unsuccessful was not because of where I live or that I was willing to relocate but because I happen to have limited experience of handling cash and this prevented me by being successul.

East Midland Trains and InterCity East Coast on the other hand didn't even bother replying with any answer and London Midland managed to lose two applications even though I paid extra via Royal Mail to ensure they got it the next day and to top it up, they had the gall to lie to me that they never got any phone calls from me enquiring even though the phone is supposedly next to the staff member, I wouldn't touch LM with a barge pole now and when I spoke to their customer services asking to double check the number not even they could get though.

On the other hand, I have virtually no problems with either FCC or NXEA when it comes to applying for positions so to answer the OP, I would apply and take it from there.

Speak to staff who already work there and get the manager's number and have a chat. If you post on Railchat I'm sure someone will probably help you out.

Where are you looking at anyway?
