For anyone having difficulty following, with the 317s /2 and /6 are the same thing- they're numbered 3176xx, but the TOPS information panels on the units say they're 317/2. They were previously numbered 3173xx.
It's not a difficult one to follow. Cl317/2's were the second batch of units (hence /2) but, after refurb, were classified as Cl317/6 to differentiate them.
Although numbering sequences sometimes hint at sub-classes, the mistake some people make is that this is somehow a hard and fast rule. It isn't.
