Hi ...

Some advice please ... is a Liverpool - Crewe anytime return valid via Warrington.

I have a meeting in Warrington to which I'm travelling in a car but then need to go Warrington - Crewe and then Crewe - Liverpool later in the day.

I'm thinking of commencing my journey at Warrington on the above ticket if this is a viable option?

Thanks for any help ...

Not according to National Rail Enquiries, but a Huyton - Crewe Anytime Return can be used via Warrington outwards (you wouldn't actually need to start at Huyton, you can just hop on at WBQ) and via Liverpool on the way back.

It's not a loophole:

HUY-CRE is £21.10 Anytime Return
LIV-CRE is £21.10 Anytime Return
WBQ-CRE is £21.10 Anytime Return

it may however be cheaper to buy separate tickets?

Slightly, yes. I missed that.

Warrington - Crewe cheapest is £11.80 (valid any time)
Crewe - Liverpool cheapest is £8.90 (Virgin Only Off Peak Day Return, good after 9am).

As a side note, if you have a couple of hours spare, you could purchase a £3 Northern Advance (fixed train only) from Warrington Central to Manchester, and a £3 Northern advance thence to Crewe. Half the price, half the comfort, twice the journey time.

The Cheshire Day Ranger covers all these routes (after 0845 M-F) and many more for £22.70.
The Anytime Day Return Warrington-Crewe is £12.00 (Direct), or £13.60 (Any Permitted, valid also via Manchester but not Liverpool).
Another weird anomaly is that all the Warrington-Crewe fares are set by either London Midland or Northern, despite neither running any direct services (none at all by LM).
Virgin, despite running all the trains, has no fares at all.

That's a good thing! Wbq - Crewe would probably double in price if VT got their grubby mits on it.
