Just noticed this service at Liverpool Lime Street. Not the usual route, is this a 'parliamentary ' service or something new ?

Thanks

It is a sort of parliamentary for the Lowton Jcn/Newton-le-Willows chord; frequently cancelled too...

It's 2 trains from Liverpool a day in the afternoon and 1 towards it in the morning.
It's been a thing for a while I think, although maybe not at the same times.

I was going for the Chester train, which was leaving from Platform 7, noticed this service while I checked the indicator, just never noticed it before.

Probably because it's cancelled so often! ;)

Within the last 12 weeks, it was cancelled more than 40% of the time.

I did it many years ago first thing in the morning from Wigan to Huyton then straight back (and back to bed) just to tick it off.

Also useful for route knowledge retention, I suppose ?

There is also an 18.31 service from Liverpool that takes the same route but stops at all stations, and a 09.24 in the opposite direction.

When Liverpool-Scotland trains were concentrated on Lime Street, they originally used to serve St Helens Junction, as that was considered the town’s Inter City station in the 1970s.

The later departure from Lime Street used to cross my usual TPE from Leeds at Newton-le-Willows until the last timetable change and generally seemed to have a reasonable loading- perhaps more comfortable for Wiganers than a train full of people for the intermediate stations on the Prescot route?

I must be an unusual traveller who used the evening service semi regularly for convenience. When I worked in Leeds and lived in Wigan a few years back, a change at NLW onto the half six-ish to Wigan was often a quicker and more convenient change than at Victoria!
