Travelling this Friday, returning on the bank holiday Monday (oh the joy!)

Anybody get it lower than the £33.40 SVR price (with railcard)?

I haven't checked the details, but I think that you probably want to see if you can get a bus up to the North Wales coast line somewhere (e.g. Bangor).

That could save an hour or two each way, and probably a few pounds as well.

 

[First class]

An easy split at Chester saves around £5-6.

Liverpool-Chester £2.90 SDS x2 = £5.80
Chester-Pwl £22.05 SVR

TOTAL: £27.85

Alternatively:

Liverpool-Bangor (Gwynedd) SVR £15.40 no restriction
THEN:
Get the number 5 bus to Caernarfon. (Arriva)
Then get the number 12 bus to Pwllheli. (Clynnog & Trefor)
If you get the connections right, then you are looking at 1h30 between Bangor & Pwllheli.
Bus fares only available as singles, and in total, one way, you're looking at £10.

TOTAL: ~£35.40


THE CHEAPEST (and very slow) WAY:

Get a Liverpool-Chester SDS @ £2.90
BUS: X94 Chester-Dollgelau (Arriva - North West & Wales Day ticket £5.50)
BUS: X32 Dolgellau-Aberystwyth (covered by above day ticket)
BUS: Aberystwyth-Pwllheli (covered by above day ticket)

IN TOTAL, SINGLE, £8.40, £16.80 return

If you wanted to reduce the cost even more to just £5.50 single, you could get the Arriva 401 bus from Liverpool-Chester instead. You get all the way to Pwllheli by Arriva, but expect to be on buses for about 6-7hours. For a fiver though it's a bargain.

If using the buses in Gwynedd, there is also the "Red Rover". Valid on pretty much every bus in the county for 1 day and a snip at £5.40.

For the via Bangor option posted above, this would reduce your costs a bit further. You also have the option of the scenic route by using the Sherpa bus network through Snowdonia, if you have the time that is!

Bear in mind that bus services around that part of the world on BH Monday will be at Sunday levels and therefore very sparse! Bangor - Caernarfon is only hourly and Caernafon - Pwllheli, only 3 services run throughout at 12.00, 14.00 and 16.15 from Pwllheli.

You can't, I asked them - a Ffestiniog Round Robin is a day ticket.

If you could break overnight, I would have used one by now; but 12 hours on-board with 9 changes is just too much for a single day.
