Hey folks sorry about the short notice but I need to get from Liverpool to Gobowen arriving around 14:00 on Saturday and head back on Sunday afternoon. I've seen some, what I consider, pretty expensive fares. Any advice very much appreciated.

I've looked up the fares for you. The best ticket for you in an off peak return (which is valid for one month). But there are no time restrictions anyway on this fare. There are to Off Peak Returns. One is valid on "Any Permitted Route" and is £38.10. However, the other is Routed "Via Chester" and is only £17.70. Make sure the person selling you the ticket gives you this one. All you have to do here is make sure you travel via Chester - which on this route is very easy. You can still travel on any train. You could easily get a train from Liverpool to Chester then a connection from Chester to Gobowen. This fare is also valid from any station within the "Liverpool cluster" which I shall copy any paste below. So, if you are travelling from any of these stations you can get a through ticket from there to Gobowen for the same price of £17.70 (do not waste money buying separate tickets for travel to and from Liverpool)

Cluster 0435 LIVERPOOL STNS 2160 HUYTON 2247 ORRELL PARK 2295 HALEWOOD
1780 BOOTLE STATIONS 2169 EDGE HILL 2248 ST MICHAELS 2303 HOUGH GREEN
2123 BLUNDELLSANDS 2171 MOSSLEY HILL 2249 SANDHILLS 2356 HIGHTOWN
2124 KIRKBY MERSEYSDE 2225 CRESSINGTON 2250 SEAFORTH & LITHD 3623 BRUNSWICK
2125 AINTREE 2229 HALL ROAD 2251 WALTON MERSEYSDE 8589 WAVERTREE TECHPK
2126 FAZAKERLEY 2235 HUNTS CROSS 2255 AIGBURTH 9709 LIVERPOOL S PWAY
2131 RICE LANE 2238 BANK HALL 2258 OLD ROAN

2155 MAGHULL 2245 KIRKDALE 2266 WEST ALLERTON

OK, you'll see that West Allerton is included in the Liverpool cluster so you can get a though ticket from West Allerton to your destination via Chester for £17.70 Does that help? :)

I can confirm that £17.70 is the best fare available from West Allerton/Liv to Gobowen for a period return.

Were you returning the same day, you would only have been able to save £1 or so using a loophole.

With the £17.70 fare, from WSA/LIV-GOB, you have the freedom to take Merseyrail via Hooton to Chester and then look for a connection; you can also travel to Warrington and then head south to Chester.

Out of interest, what is the £1 saving using a loophole on this journey for returning same day?

Not going to be revealed in public, for obvious reasons. It involves being adventurous with routeing. If and when it's needed I can advise over PM. :)

Cheers for all the advice folks which was very much appreciated. You aren't going to believe this but after careful checks to my remaining funds until payday (Yesterday) I actually ended up splurging on the most expensive option by any route, this was assisted by the fact that a friend who owed me £150 being able to pass it back when I got home on Sunday. I also took in to consideration the rail replacement bus from Chester to Rock Ferry on the Sunday.

On the Saturday I ended up on a 156 West Allerton to Parkway, a 350 Parkway to Crewe, a Voyager to Chester and a 175 to Gobowen. Pretty much the same on the return but I stayed on the 350 to Lime Street to collect my cash. Ha ha.

The sun was shining and I had a very pleasant trip across the Cheshire Plain. It is right on my doorstep but very easy to forget how beautiful it is. My final destination (A cabin in the woods in Shropshire) was lovely.
