Travelled today on a Crewe - 'Liverpool Stations' Off Peak Day Return.

After reaching Lime Street I walked down to Central and tried to pass through the barrier (to travel on to James St). The barrier rejected my ticket. I took it to the manned barrier where I was told "Once you've arrived at a Liverpool station, that's it, you can't use it again, but it's o.k., carry on to James Street".

So on I went [I felt quite legitimately, as I thought the whole point of 'Liverpool stations' was to travel to any Liverpool destination] and - interestingly - the barrier at James Street accepted the ticket, no problem.

So can I use a 'Liverpool stations' ticket to travel ... well ... to the Liverpool station of my choice?

Incidentally I went on to buy a Moorfields - James St single for that journey - and when I got to James St the barrier returned my ticket. Curious.

Central's barriers weren't accepting my valid ticket either the other day (Sandhills to Green Lane) - perhaps a quirk of how they've been set up?

I've always been told that in these circumstances you can use it to the Liverpool station of choice; if you couldn't, you'd have a mass exodus of people from the Wirral having to leave the train at James Street (well, Moorfields at the mo).

Why did you walk to central when you could have got train to James st from lime st

I had my reasons ;)

Seriously, I had 'things to do' in the Lime Street area before heading for the waterfront area and by then Central was more convenient.

The gateline assistant was incorrect to say that.

For a hassle-free journey you may wish to consider buying a ticket to Sandhills in future.

Personally, I've never encountered any issues with using a ticket to "Liverpool Stations" through barriers, though I normally go though the manual barrier.

The same applies for when I want to break my journey in Liverpool city centre, though the barriers aren't always set up to recognise a BOJ, (sometimes the barriers work, other times, they don't).

Off topic, but a few weeks back, I used the train from Eastham Rake to Bootle New Strand. At Eastham Rake, the lady in the ticket office said she couldn't sell me a ticket as the machine wasn't working & to buy at the other end. Being a little dubious about this give the penalty fare regime, I boarded the train & at Moorfields, went upstairs to the barrier. I explained what had happened & the chap on the barrier just smiled & said "Ooh -Eastham Rake - the buggers" and let me through to buy a ticket. :D

Except that I didn't want to go to Sandhills!

And a ticket to Sandhills wouldn't be valid to James Street, which is where I wanted to go!

I have had similar issues on a destination Liverpool Stations ticket. I can't remember where it was (James St or Moorfields, I think the latter) but the barrier wouldn't accept it. The guy on the barrier looked equally confused (probably as he hadn't heard of the origin, Mirfield) but let us through.

Well Crewe to Sandhills is the same price as Crewe - Liverpool Stns.

Sandhills is beyond Liverpool Stns, and I see no reason why you couldn't do Crewe - Liverpool L St (change) - Liverpool Ctrl - Liverpool James St (change)- Moorfields (change)- Sandhills...and stop short at Liverpool James St. :)

That would probably cause more problems than a ticket to Liverpool.

I think he was just guessing, it is quite obviously not true or how would Wirral line passengers etc. get to Central? The merseyrail barriers do seem to be oddly programmed.

Agree. While I've the greatest respect for those that work four of the most volatile gatelines in the UK, I reckon one or two of the newer staff seem to have not been trained properly or payed much attention in the retail course.

Witnessed something quite similar myself just last week whilst shopping at Liverpool Central. I was about six feet behind my mother (who was on a ticket from the Borderlands line) - she was being stopped at the barrier by a new-ish looking RPA when a certain (veteran) RPI came legging over and intervened.

Assumption by some seems to be, 'coz the barrier says so'.

I am confused. Did you buy an additional ticket or not?
