Maybe they should have grabbed some of the 180's that were going spare. Even if they weren't suitable for the Liverpool-Norwich run, they could have gone on some of the London ones and allowed for 222's on the Liverpool-Norwich. They've done it before.

Correct me if I'm wrong! And feel my wrath! <D

AFAIK some 180s are effectively spare as we speak. East Coast have 5x180s that they don't want with 3 being subleased to Northern until they get some more units - which will be soon. FGW have apparently looked at taking the 180s back on but not made a decision, while the previous DfT under the Labour government ruled that Open Access operators couldn't take any more 180s while there was a shortage of carriages.

Im always suprised at how well used these trains are out of Norwich. The service gets little or no advertising or promotion in East Anglia. Ok if you know about advance purchase or MegaTrain all well & good. Last big publicity push must have been with Regional railways in the 90s who had bill board & radio ads across the region which highlighted things like 13 trains a day to Nottingham, 11 to Manchester ...Direct.

Perhaps due to limited capacity & the fact crowding exists now on certain trains this would not be a good idea. Shame though as many people i speak to are suprised they go hourly or didnt realise places such as Warrington & Chesterfield where possible without a change.

One thing I've never been able to understand is East Midlands Trains referring to Liverpool-Norwich as a "local" service, when, quite plainly, it is anything but! I think with some additional capacity and better marketing, there is much potential to develop the service, particularly now that punctuality / reliability has apparently improved so much.

I wish that the trains offered First Class too, as the "rival" operator(s) on virtually all sections of the route offer First Class, apart from between Sheffield and Nottingham and, even here, a First Class journey is possible by changing trains at Derby. Only Nottingham to Grantham remains totally Standard Class only with no other possibilities. EMT's MD, Tim Shoveller, has said he'd like to put 1st Class on these trains, but, in 2 car formations, that would lead to them being even more overcrowded (or total abuse of the 1st Class section).

Why not re-form some of the 158s into 3 car sets, with better luggage space and a decent amount of 1st Class (a bit like the original TPE 3 car Class 158 formations), then run 5 car trains between Liverpool and Sheffield or Nottingham, with the 3 cars going onto Norwich? I think 5 cars would fit at all stations currently served by EMT between Liverpool and Nottingham (apart from maybe Langley Mill).

I think doubling up 158s (attempting to ensure that all services west of Nottingham are 4-car) is the best solution to overcrowding, considering EMTs issues with stock.

The 158s are the most suitable stock EMT has (although if they had 170s, they would probably be more suitable for the Sheffield - Manchester - Liverpool section). The refurbishment is nice although I am surpised they did not install screens and automated announcements (especially as SWT are so fond of these things!).

Also remember that 156s used to run the route and while they're good for short-medium distance services, I am not sure I'd like to sit 7 hours on one. They are far nosier than any voyager!

Even now, the majority of the Liverpool to Norwich trains are four car as far as Nottingham.

Afraid not. Not even 50% of the Nott's-Liverpool services are diagrammed for four car sets at the minute. IIRR 07:52 Liv-Not, 06:40 Not-Liv (and return) 14:45 and 15:45 Not-Liv's (and return) and 21:36 Liv-Not are the only one's.

The plan is that when the four 156's arrive (later this year we're informed) they will be used to displace 158's off Skegness services and allow them to make all Not-Liv services four car, with the rear set being detached at Nottingham, then running round to strengthen the next Liverpool bound service.
This sounds great on paper, but in the real world units refuse to couple, units fail and so the strengthening set gets pinched to deputise, as happens frequently now. To be honest, whilst four coaches on all trains is a great step forward, i can see performance issues arising for the reasons mentioned above.
I notice another poster mentioned that EMT had stated that 158's were the correct units for the route. I've not seen or heard this myself. It certainly didn't come from someone who had driven 158's over the route, which are constantly at full power and still not attaining the potential speeds as they just aren't powerful enough. As mentioned in another thread, i worked a 222 to Liverpool the other week, and it easily kept time everywhere enroute, even over the Hope Valley where it was restricted to 70mph maximum. The reason for this was the better acceleration and ability to maintain speed. Even climbing Normans Bank between Earles and Edale, we easily maintained 70mph on about a quarter power, wheras a 158 would be wide open and losing speed.
The apparent sticking point for using better stock is the 45mph restriction for non-Sprinters between Ely and Lakenheath. Not really an issue as a 222 could do 125 between Grantham and P'boro, thus with a little tweaking of paths the same journey time should be possible. It has even been mentioned that, in the not too distant future, the 45mph restriction may be done away with.
Another possibility is that, with the current plan being to shunt Norwich bound passengers from the rear 158 onto the front one at Nott's (Because as we all know, everyone listens to the announcements about being in the correct portion of the train don't they? ) just run a 222 on the Liverpool bit, and do a set swap at Nott's with a 158 going forward.

The real reason you couldn't run 222's regularly on the Nott's Liverpools, is simply that there are not enough of them in the world, all available being on the London's leaving perhaps one for maintenance.
I've always advocated getting 180's for the route, and also releasing 222's from carting fresh air about between Kettering and Corby by substituting a 153 to shuttle between the two. Unfortunately i'm only a Driver and people with more egg on their hats than me get to make the decisions. Perhaps when the franchise comes up for renewal it'll be for a longer, say 15year time period. Maybe then there will be some incentive for the operator, whoever that will be, to invest in some new stock for the route and see a return on the investment.

Does anyone know if the 9:37 and 10:37 EMT departures on a Saturday from Manchester for Liverpool are 2 or 4 car?

The thing is though, what is better than 158s? 4 car Meridiens would give less capacity than 4 car 158s, they would cost more to run (higher tracks access charges, higher fuel bills), would not be able to run at SP Speeds (isn't a lot of the bit over the Pennines SP too) and would only be able to do 125mph between Peterborough and Grantham. 170s? The only advantage they give is that they are better at the Western end of the route. Performance wise they would make the 158s look good. Ideally, get more 185s (or displace them with electrification in the North West) and use them Liverpool to Nottingham (give the service to TPX). Reform the 158s to 3 car for Nottingham to Norwich.

They'd also be able to do 100mph on the 125mph track you mentioned around Peterborough. 158s can only do 90mph.

That would give Liverpool-Nottingham less seating than Nottingham-Peterborough and if anything we need to find more routes like Manchester Airport-Blackpool for 185s to run on not more long routes for them.

Are they not? I have been very fortunate then: The vast majority of the time my experiences of the Liverpool to Norwich trains have been of four car trains. I thought that this was indicative of the service as a whole, ta for the correction, and thanks for a very informative post.

I've never been on a 4 car Liverpool-Nottingham service since EMT took over and the only time I recall seeing a 4 car unit in operation was when one was at Manchester Oxford Rd about 10:30 on a weekday which was quite a while ago and one of those was a SWT livered 158. I can't remember which direction it was going in though.

185s? eek no. Would rather a 158.
I suggest more 175s!!!

158s are perhaps more comfortable for the longer distances (although the EMT 158s have the same seating as FGW's HSTs - which some people don't like:)) but 185s have a better door configuration to deal with the Sheffield - Manchester - Liverpool crowds. If you've ever seen a 158 struggling to unload/load on this stretch, you'll know what I mean..

Big deal. 10mph speed difference over about 30miles, and thats only downhill since both types are usually on the 75mph slows uphill anyway to allow the Intercitys to overtake. 30miles at 90mph takes 20mins, 30mph at 100mph takes 18mins. Trains have to accelerate and brake though so it will take longer and the difference will be less.

Yes, OK. Yeah why not. Brilliant idea. Im sure the passengers wouldnt mind!!
Well I can’t see why they would mind. With two intermediate trailers there’s basically the same capacity as in a four carriage 158 formation (Assuming toilets in the two driving cars only).

Shorter station dwell times and better passenger circulation than the equivalent 158 formation due to the 1/3 and 2/3 position doors as well, albeit making it a bit chilly at station stops in the winter.

If only the 185s where the design length of 4 carrages, they would be ideal for the route, but they'd still be needed for TPE North anyway, no matter how much NW Electrification happens...

158's have more seats, but less luggage space. Capacity is about more than cramming as many seats in as possible. The passengers who frequent this route tend to have lots of bags, cases, pushchairs, bikes etc. Ideal for a 222.

Higher track access charges yes, higher fuel bills? i'm not so sure seeing as 158's spend most of the time at full power thrashing their nuts off, wheras a 222 gets up to speed quickly and left to coast or maintain speed with just a tickle of power. They also match 158 timings over the Hope Valley due to reaching speed a lot quicker. 158's have a job getting up to 90mph, and when they do only reach it for short periods of time.

(give the service to TPX)

What makes you think that TPE would make a better job of it? It's a matter of what rolling stock is used on a route, not who is operating it. Besides, 185's can't run at the higher Sprinter speeds over the Hope valley that you see as a relevant point.

You're very welcome sir, hope you stay lucky with the four cars :D

I added that as a further advantage to what another poster had said not only one advantage and now that you mention it a train being able to make up 2 minutes on Liverpool-Norwich is an advantage at only two minutes. It makes the difference between the train making and missing it's path.

TBH, the best solution I've heard so far is to get the 5 remaining 180s with EMT aswell, and either have the 4 or 5 carrage 222s interchanged with 4 car 158s on the route, or the 180s themselves.

I agree the 180s would be best placed at EMT - but we have to remember the 5 x 180s would only displace at most 4 x 222s thanks to maintenance routines (and simply the fact the 180s are not as reliable!).

I also think the Corby 222s are a massive waste of resources. Restore a few peak stops at Kettering and scrap this, replace with an hourly or 2 hourly Kettering - Corby - Derby Sprinter service. This would probably mean relieving 2 (??) 222s but using a similar number of Sprinters.

Further, EMT could retime some of the non-key Sheffield fasts to use HSTs rather than 222s.

So how many 222s would these proposed changes actually free up for use on Liverpool - Norwich? My total guesstimate is around 9 - is that enough?

I know in the past people have said Corby-London isn't self contained but if the diagrams were redone would 5x180s be enough to be the designated trains on that route, releasing 222s?

Completely superfluous for that route.

Just worked it out on the back of a fag packet

Diagram leaves StP xx:00 Arrives Corby xx+1:10 7 min layover Dep Corby xx+1:17 Arr StP xx+2:29, 31min layover.

Now that means 4 diagrams

STPd - CBYa - CBYd - STPa
1100 - 1310 - 1317 - 1429
1200 - 1410 - 1417 - 1529
1300 - 1510 - 1517 - 1629
1400 - 1610 - 1617 - 1729

As above, add four.

This could run as is with 4 of 5 180s on the diagrams at once. And release the 222/1 to run Liverpool - Norwich. Allong with 4 car 158s

Completely superfluous for that route.

On that route they have advantages:
1. The same crew can work an outward and return journey without a crew change so less crews have to be trained.
2. Probably all services on that route could be operated by 180s. If they went on to Liverpool-Norwich or to TPE there would be a mixture of different trains on the same route.

I don't think 158s could run Corby-London as they aren't 100mph stock. I'm not sure if 170s would still be allowed on the MML.

I don't think Corby needs a service in to London at all.

Yeah, but it would be political suicide to get rid of it now, or even reduce it to less than hourly. The 180s should end up with EMT or XC though, same engines as their LDPE stock, but diferent manufacturers in each case. There just isn't enough 180s available to be able to avoid a microfleet
