Looking at ways to travel return to London from Liverpool on Easter Monday for a 3.00 p.m. KO game, (thanks HS2 not!).

Via Sheffield is one route, but expensive and slow. Are there any other options?

Coach would be my advice.

Rail alternatives will be slow, extremely unpleasant and very overcrowded.

NRE seems to recommend going via Birmingham and Chiltern, which is likely to be cheap (it's a Permitted Route, but splitting is likely to be cheaper) but also very busy.

If you did want to persist with rail then it's West Midlands Trains to Birmingham then Chiltern.

Chiltern have been appealing for people to avoid travelling to the football with them as the trains will be rammed already.

Other option is to stick with the WCML, buses are running to Stanmore for the Jubilee Line from MKC. I suspect that will be very quiet, though you'll need to change at Crewe (to LNR) as Avanti aren't running from Liverpool, only Brum and Manchester (basically you've got the Scotland-via-Brum running to Brum only, and only those Avanti trains that would normally serve MKC otherwise running). It will however be slow, I'd guess about 5-6hrs?

There are no Premership games whatsoever on Easter Monday (it's the FA Cup final on Easter Saturday) and only the games at QPR and Millwall in London in the Championship, so there should be VERY few football fans on trains from the north west that day?

The fastest route suggested by FastJP (which ignores permitted routes) is to change at Piccadilly and Sheffield (if you want to use the train all the way) or to change at Wigan, Milton Keynes and Bedford. Both have similar journey times of around 4.5 hours.

Alternatively you're looking at changing at Piccadilly and Leamington/Banbury, though that's an even longer journey time of around 5.5 hours.

Unfortunately there are no good options this Easter with so much of the WCML shut.

ECML and the Pennines look to be operating normally, so KGX - Leeds - Lime St is a good option

Unfortunately it's also a TPE strike day so no direct Liverpool-Leeds services - only a handful of services from Manchester. Going via Preston to catch the Blackpool-York service is actually quicker!

Strike days are Sat and Sun - Easter Monday is normal

Thanks guys for some really useful information. Anyone think it's easier staying at home though?

The option via Chiltern to Marylebone (either XC New St. to Banbury or direct from Moor St.) is surprisingly good value (£46.50 with a senior railcard) and not much longer than a straight LNW service via Crewe at just over four hours.

Edit: Kings X option via Leeds is twice the price and no faster.

Though Chiltern will be utterly heaving, and I wouldn't be totally surprised were it physically impossible to board at Banbury.

I think if I was going to get on XC from New St I'd continue to Oxford and then either into Paddington or Marylebone from there. Not a Permitted Route from Liverpool if I recall but you could split. I'd expect fairly normal loadings on those trains as people won't think to go that way to get to London.

0947 Liverpool to Rugby
1140 Rugby-Kettering replacement bus by Avanti
1248 Kettering-St Pancras by EMR, arriving London at 1351.

Similar journey departing 0847 if you want to allow more time once in London.

that would be my option :)

Mine too. If there was a very important reason to make the journey on Easter weekend, such as visiting family like my little sister is doing that weekend, then fair enough. Travelling long distance for a football match, on a weekend with significant disruption for engineering works never mind any potential on the day issues (weather events are certainly possible), then I'd be staying indoors having been to the shop to get some treats in. Maybe even ordering in a takeaway to make it more of a special occasion.

A much cheaper alternative, and no risk of overcrowding one's living space unless inviting friends around. No queues at half-time for the facilities, no over-priced refreshments and a fortune saved on admission.

To me, spending say £20-£25 on watching it on TV (I'd spend a lot less than £25, but I wouldn't be buying alcohol, which many people would) is a much more sensible option than double that just to get to/from Liverpool.

There's also the fact I wouldn't want to be stuck on a very busy train with silly people, but that's just me! No covid concerns by staying indoors to watch the match!

However, should the OP decide to go and not one of us can stop you going so it's entirely your choice, I agree with the honourable gentleman from the area of Bletchley, Paddington-Oxford-Birmingham would be a good call to avoid Chiltern and potentially over-crowded 165s and 168s.

Quite, one could potentially do Paddington-Worcestershire Parkway-Birmingham which is a nice and easy change. I've no idea if trains are running that way though on Easter Monday. Granted, it's not the cheapest way to get there, but quality over price is sometimes the way to do things. Another alternative, but certainly not cheap, would be Paddington-Newport-Crewe and onto Liverpool. Such a routing would not be valid on a normal fare, I'm sure, but it's certainly a more interesting way to go.

Final thought is that the Jubilee line sets are good fun to travel on, so going to Stanmore for a rail replacement coach to MKC is not an entirely bad idea. I think I would actually take that routing because of getting some 96 stock action in! :D Without looking any of this up, I don't know what journey times etc are like but compared to the potential sweatboxes that Chiltern will be I would have no issue over going via the rail replacement option to MKC. Of course, I would only be doing it if I needed to do it for an urgent or family situation.

I will be working on the Easter Monday morning, I will not be going near the railway that weekend. Or the roads, which are just as likely to be chaotic.

Very little to do with HS2 this one, 95% NR.

Is Paddington - Reading - Liverpool a "permitted route" using the SVS fare?

Sorry, does this mean I can use the £68.60 (£45.28 with a Railcard) SVS fare on this route?
Yes, that's a permitted route for interavailable fares such as the £45.25 SVS. @jfollows was just illustrating the reason why it's permitted.

Appears there are also RRB to Bedford for Thameslink which may be quicker.

A crass and unuseful response which shows a lack of understanding. There are 5 divisions of football in England which could potentially involve travelling from Merseyside to the south east, i.e. they're nationwide.

On Easter Monday at 3pm, this will be a lower league fixture. TV? Dear me.

If it helps, On Monday 18th RTT shows, Liverpool Lime Street at 09:08/10:05 arrives Birmingham New Street 10:51/11:51, Birmingham Moor Street depart 11:14 and 12:14 arrives London Marylebone at 13:12/14:12. Depends how much time you need from London Marylebone to get to the match what time you depart from Lime Street, 09:08 or 10:05

My option too, I never travel for Easter as that's the worst time to have a holiday or long distance travel, engineering works gets booked for that time which is crazy as it clashes with the break, not just that the motorways would be really bad, the whole trip would be torture with a very high potential of things going wrong.

I stay at home chilled and stress free.
