Not to sure wether this should go here but here goes, one thing I've always wanted to know is that is there a reason why the Tunnels as you leave Lime Street Station have got street names printed as you enter them, just seems odd to me

It isn't by chance the name of the tunnel is it? I know there's quite a few named after roads on the run into / out of Lime St.

I thought that these signs were the names of the streets at the top of the sections.

They are the street names above, but they also correspond to the tunnel names. Each separate bit of Lime Street cutting is technically a separate tunnel, and each tunnel is named after the street above.

You'll notice the road names are repeated on the structures out of Birmingham Snow Hill as well. And quite likely in a few other locations.

Bridges normally only have numbers and names are normally on tunnels only, but if there are a lot of overbridges in quick succession then the road names are applied to the structures - it helps identify the exact location in an emergency.

Sometimes they're given arbitrary names of their own - on the St Pancras International to Farringdon section of FCC/Thameslink, once you pass through the now closed 'Kings Cross Thameslink' you go through a series of 'Clerkenwell Tunnel No. 1, 2, 3, etc' - the Metropolitan/Hammersmith&City/Circle line tubes also mirror the FCC track at this point along the track.

Then you get things like 'The Rat Hole' which have unofficial names of their own...

As they are such long tunnels with lots of sets of points within the tunnel section, it is a good idea and teaches newer traincrew their exact location when speaking to the box, so that they don't just ring up and give the usual generic location 'err - I'm in the tunnels'.
