Can anybody remember a passenger service which arrived at Liverpool Lime Street around 02.00-03.00 in the morning operating in the 80's? This would have come from the Crewe direction possibly 01.50 there. Thanks

I have a working timetable for 1980 which shows a candidate:-

• 1F02 01:23 Stafford to Liverpool Lime St.
  Crewe dep 01:54 (but advertised as 01:49)
  Lime St arr 02:33½

It's shown with Timing Load E595, so electric loco hauled coaching stock and indicated as conveying mail MX.
I don't have the corresponding public timetable which would confirm this train was available to passengers, but it may have been a portion off the 23:15 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly, detached at Stafford.

1F02 was a different train to the Euston - Lime St Sleeper, which in the same timetable is shown as:-

• 1F01 00:50 Euston to Liverpool Lime St.
  Crewe dep 03:27½ (advertised as 03:24)
  Lime St arr 04:07

The Sleeper was worked as Manchester and Liverpool portions by this stage, also splitting at Stafford.

There used to be one in the opposite direction as well leaving Lime St around 23:50 - 00:15, whenever I got it it always went via Northampton.

I think these finished about 1992 or 1993.

I can remember getting a train around 11p.m. on a number of occasions in the late 70s from Euston to Liverpool. A Tranmere fan, I was travelling back from mid-week games. There was certainly time for a few swift pints post match.

Did the sleepers run without seated accommodation during this period?

I think the Euston/Liverpool and Euston/Manchester Sleepers always ran with both seated & sleeper carriages.

As far as I'm aware, the only trains which ran in BR days with only Sleeping Car accommodation were on the Anglo Scottish routes - a couple per night each way between Euston & Glasgow, a couple between Kings Cross & Edinburgh and at one stage the "Night Aberdonian" between Kings Cross & Aberdeen. (No idea what they did on the Western Region, however).

Regarding the train which the OP asked about (0233 Lime St arrival, 2315 Euston to Manchester & Liverpool), this is shown in earlier Working Timetables in the mid-1970s as a Newspaper and Mail train. I wonder if BR decided to add a couple of Mk1's to this one in the 1980s and started to advertise it in the passenger timetable? They certainly seem to have done this well before the Wapping Dispute in the mid-1980s which indirectly led to a run-down of newspaper traffic on the railways.

I remember clearly sitting at a table with three mates taking the 45001 to Lime Street so maybe not all sleeper stock.

It shows the following details with the bed symbol which indicates also seated accommodation unless otherwise indicated

Remain in berths until 08.0 (SuO 08.30)
Also Stoke 03.23 set down only
Stockport 04.04 set down only

There was also an 01.49 departure from Crewe to Lime St arrive 02.34 which didn't seem to connect with anything

The southbound sleeper ran separately throughout from the Manchester train
