Liverpool - Exeter

Looking to book this using Advance Single for late March which is within the timescale for these tickets. Coming up as £42.50 One way. Over the festive period I booked a journey of almost the same distance from Liverpool - Glasgow £15. Again Advance Single, also £15 the return leg.

So why is it nearly 3 times the price ? Is it because I'm using the XC operator ? If I wanted to split the journey where should I be looking at doing that ?

Yes! Although the Liverpool-Glasgow fair that you quote is quite a cheap one, so makes the XC look worse value than it perhaps is.

If I wanted to split the journey where should I be looking at doing that ?

Do you have precise details of dates and times of travel, whether you have a railcard, and if you want to return? The best splits might depend on these.

Birmingham and/or Bristol might be good splits: picking a random date in late March I can find plenty of £9 singles to Birmingham. There then seem to be a few £19 advance tickets between Birmingham and Exeter, but not on all trains, so this depends on the when and how you want to travel. There are also some £21 fares to Bristol from Liverpool, and £4 fares on to Exeter from Bristol.

A different option might be Cardiff, travelling via Chester, but again this depends on your flexibility and desired travel time!

Yes I will be returning & no I don't have a railcard.

Not sure of the exact dates because I want to nail down the accomodation first.
