I suppose it depends if the money they could get from a developer would be more or less than the cost of buying a new site and kitting that site out. The Rock Ferry depot site isn't particularly large and it is squashed in by the football ground behind it.
Also, I expect much will depend on what work Rock Ferry can gain. I can't see that it would be viable to retain a depot of it's size just for 3 buses an hour on two routes.

The depot yard used to be somewhat larger, extending further to the north. That land was sold some years back & is now housing. There's also been a fair bit of regeneration in that area. Don't think Stagecoach would have much difficulty offloading the site should they wish to.

Thanks @paddyb6

Appears to be mostly as per the draft plans. There’s an additional service 453 linking Heswall to Clatterbridge hospital which fills a gap in the network. It’s not shown on the new map, so I assume this is a late change?

I thought the plans included an evening service on route 464, but that’s not included in the new timetable.

I've previously called for that link to be reinstated, but it should go to West Kirby complementing the 22/22A rather than Thingwall.

Note 407 now has an evening & Sunday service, but it's hourly, with additional Sunday Birkenhead-Liverpool shorts, the route in Moreton is Bermuda Road, Town Meadow Lane, Millhouse Lane then Hoylake Road & back to Liverpool, however the Monday to Friday 407 will no longer serve Cook Street, but annoyingly the Sunday 407 is timed to run a few minutes behind the 438A.

The 414/414A no longer goes through to Woodside either, all journey's start/terminate Birkenhead Bus Station, also note 414A which goes via Hamilton Road & Victoria Road in New Brighton, which used to be the 8, then 7A/8A/8E back in the day.

Very disappointing to see them no longer serving cook Street its not exactly joined up transport if you have to walk a mile through the city to get anywhere, and other that that not really any improvements to cross river, especially the 464 and 487 need better evening services. however the new things around Heswall are a great addition, especially as brimstage currently has nothing

I too thought this would be the case - disappointing to see that it isn't happening.

Pleased with some of the other changes, the 453 will certainly be useful, restoring some of the more rural links across to Heswall and Irby via Thornton Hough

Just noticed the 414/414A route in Birkenhead, the new route is via Prenton Hall Road, Prenton Lane, Prenton Road West, Prenton Road East, Greenway Road, Derby Road, Whetstone Lane rather than via Woodchurch Road & Borough Road, there's going to be some matchday diversions too when Tranmere Rovers are at home as Prenton Road West is often closed between Storeton Road & Borough Road.

Rather annoyingly, the 409 still has that annoying 35 minute frequency rather than being every 30 minutes, not sure if that could have been extended from Wallasey Village via Grove Road & Warren Drive to New Brighton to avoid the long layover in Wallasey Village.

The trouble is that the more time spent in Liverpool City Centre the more the possibility of delay.

I wouldn't say the stops closest to the tunnel exit/entrance were in the middle of nowhere.

I dislike using Sir Thomas Street as that can be crowded, prefer getting on Cross River routes at Cook Street, i only use Sir Thomas Street when i have too.

I don't understand why the 407 doesn't continue to West Kirby. So much for providing more connectivity to the network. Also it's insane how the 464 has not been enhanced!

Also given that Merseytravel are in charge of the tunnel, they should consider Extending the birkenhead circulars into Liverpool city centre so that people deep on thesw estates can get to town without having to change at the bus station.

The 407 doesn't need to extend to West Kirby. West Kirby / Hoylake / Meols to Birkenhead passengers have got the 438, as well as an excellent rail service through Birkenhead and continuing on to Liverpool. And connectivity has been added to the network through the 483, which links West Kirby / Hoylake / Meols passengers to Arrowe Park Hospital (the major hospital on the Wirral) - and in the case of Hoylake / Meols passengers, to Greasby - for the first time in many years. There is an argument that the WK - Moreton leg has been reduced from its current 5 buses an hour (3x407 and 2x38) to 3 (2x438 and 1x483/4), which may or may not prove to be sufficient for the demand, but that's relatively easily tweaked should the situation arise after a bedding in period.

As for extending the Birkenhead circulars into Liverpool - why?!? The Birkenhead-Liverpool tunnel already has ample buses, with a simple connection at Birkenhead Bus Station. Extending the likes of the 491/2/5 through the tunnel would benefit very few people, and add to the already chaotic situation regarding Wirral bound buses in Liverpool City Centre - not to mention introducing the liklihood (some would say near-certainty) of importing traffic delays to these services. Oh sorry, I said NOT to mention the liklihood of importing traffic delays to these services!

One thing that does need amending though is the timetable for the 482, which many would read as suggesting the service goes to Heswall [rail] Station. It needs to say Heswall Bus Station (my emboldening), as with other services that call at this facility (For those unafmiliar with the area, Heswall [rail] Station is a good mile from the Bus Station - it's what used to be called Heswall Hills.) The journey takes six minutes on the bus (the new 453).

I remember when Arriva did extend the old 495/497 through to Liverpool back in 2003, but that was short lived & only lasted 5 months as no one used it through to Liverpool

The 407 new Sunday times is bonkers that shares part of the route with the 38A to be renumbered 438A, but the 407 is timed a few minutes behind the 438A

407 departs Birkenhead for Moreton around xx45
438A departs Birkenhead for Moreton & West Kirby xx41

It's not great going from Moreton either

407 departs Moreton Cross for Birkenhead & Liverpool xx18
438A departs Moreton Cross for Birkenhead & Eastham Ferry at xx16

Both routes are hourly on Sundays, so you think they'd have better coordination by retiming the 407 to go about 30 minutes later

A similar issue to that outlined by @Statto affects the 438a/487 from Birkenhead on Sundays. Two services on hourly frequencies, serving Tranmere, that both leave Birkenhead within a few minutes of each other.

It’s better heading from Tranmere into Birkenhead, as departures are more evenly spaced.

In an ideal world, re-timing the eastbound/southbound 438a on Sundays would fix this problem & the one @Statto mentioned on the 407 corridor. That said, I expect that would require an extra vehicle & more drivers.

Perhaps they should rename the station?! I'm always pleased to see that one of the nearby shops still calls itself Heswall Hills.

As for more buses Birkenhead-Liverpool, there doesn't need to be anymore routes through the tunnel as you have 22 buses an hour Birkenhead-Liverpool as it is even after franchising comes in.

1/X1, combined to 3bph
407, 3bph
437, 6bph
464, 2bph
471/472, combined to 6bph
487, 2 bph

I've just noticed something odd with the 407 Sunday timetable

xx32 from Liverpool arrives in Birkenhead around xx45,
xx57 from Liverpool arrives in Birkenhead around xx21.

How does one take 13 minutes with the other one taking 24 minutes on exactly the same route?

I think the 407 Liverpool-Birkenhead Sunday shorts is because buses would otherwise have about a 40 minute layover in Liverpool had it been hourly throughout.

The extension of the 407 to WK was only relatively recently introduced and was done largely as an old-school revenue-grab with Arriva competing with Stagecoach. The move to franchising (and removal of direct competition) means unnecessary duplication can be removed and the resource used elsewhere, which is exactly what has happened here. That’s one of the biggest benefits.

The hasty introduction of franchising will inevitably lead to timetable issues in places - ideally these would be resolved over the next few months as it settles down. (Whether they will is another question, especially given that all the planners will be busy with City and Sefton franchising, but still…) Probably easiest for locals to raise any they find with their councillors, who can submit a formal request for review.

The 407 extension to West Kirby is a part replacement for the Avon 83/83A after Avon ceased operations in 2018, Arriva did operate the 83/83A afterwards but withdrew it after a few weeks, the 407 was extended to West Kirby a couple of months after the 83/83A was withdrawn in January 19.

Either an extremely sloppy scheduler has been employed who can't timetable for toffee, or AI has been let loose on the timetables.

Or it was done in a hurry to meet a political objective/timescale without adequate resource being provided to achieve a high level of quality.

Looks like £4 unless there is a special arrangement. Perhaps this might change with franchising as there is a degree of circular wooden dollars?
The full rate for a bus is £4.00, but when I’ve passed through, the tollgate displays a lower value (I think £3.60).

A discount for local vehicles is available for Liverpool area residents & I get tunnel crossings for less than the full rate for cars. I expect there is a similar arrangement for other vehicles.

Must cost the bus companies a lot of money

Probably a typo, unless the 407 back to Liverpool can leave eight minutes before it arrives at Birkenhead.

There are a few typos in the various new timetables, on M-F evenings there are apparently two 1 services operating from Liverpool to Chester at exactly the same time.

Still very sloppy whoever is at fault. Schedulers or Merseytravels publicity team. At the same time that these deluded organisations believe they are the fix all the the regions transport issues, this is the sort of work being produced for the publicly ran bus network.

As far as I know, Arriva still have the contract as I can't find any tender issued to replace them. They still have another year or so with some of the depots in Merseyside, and Chester isn't too far away either to take on stuff so I think they may see the contract out, even if they struggle a bit towards the end.
