Hi Guys,

short time lurker and thought I'd join this interesting forum.

Has anyone an update on when this run down station will be receiving any sort of refurbishment? It really is a dangerously overcrowded place and in poor weather it's horribly depressing, what with the leaks in the roof and gloomy platform area.

It must be one of the busiest island platforms in the land - it desperately needs some work done and fast.

Merseytravel keep harping on about an 'approved' refurbishment on the way, I think it will probably consist mostly of removal of the middle furniture to allow more space on the island platform. Don't think there's any definate plans unveiled yet. You may wish to keep an eye on Network Rails press releases or similarly, Merseytravels.

I don't think there will be any substantial changes (ie track widening) as down in the tunnels, that becomes prohibitively expensive for a PTE or the DfT to pay for.

Thanks for that info. I would have thought future expansion was inevitable, what with passenger numbers rising on the network.

The central village development, the area above Central Station, is already in progress and I would of thought they'd have used the opportunity to make some real improvement, it is a large residential and commercial development after all.

Call that narrow? THIS is narrow, as is this

Clapham North is 5.5 million passengers/year. Clapham Common is 9 million.

I suggest the LVL central lowlevel platform is not too narrow as it has worked for many decades with a higher notional throughput. I acknowledge that simultanious arrivals of full length trains in opposing directions could put pressure but I do not see why it would be a major issue.

Exiting the platforms is another issue and I hope Mersyrail is managing this.

Can you supply us with figures on what the higher notional throughput was in previous decades?

Was the low level station busier before the loop and link lines were built and when it acted as a terminus for Mersey Railway?

The platform isnt that narrow really, they could actually solve any prolems with overcrowding by shifting the 3 car stops towards the Hunts Cross end (where they actually have removed the benches)

They have been rabbiting on about central station improvement for donkeys years, it'll get done around the same time as the extension to Headbolt Lane and Wrexham :roll:
