This is a thread focusing on the liveries of trains in the UK. Post pictures of any new liveries you come across and these can be discussed, along with the various liveries which have come and gone in the past. This should be a good way to keep up to date with the liveries of trains in the UK. I would also like to be able to use this thread to discuss fictional liveries and I will create 2D drawings of various trains on request, carrying fictional or real liveries. Hope you make use of this thread, Dan :)

I really like mostly-black liveries - Grand Central's for instance. I think they look really smart and also do a good job at obscuring any dirt ;)

Yeah I would agree about the EMT livery, its designed to make them look modern but just shows their age. I do love all second generation DMU's though. I do like the newer Grand Central livery but the valenta one was.... Im not, sure but it wasn't my cup of tea.

This is an example of the 2D drawings I have started doing, just a basic 158 in the old metro livery but here it is anyway:

I think the EMT connect livery 153,156 makes the trains look even older than they actually are.

It looks ok on 156s imo, but looks terrible on 153 as it shows off all of the the rivets and also emphasises how old the cabs look

Persoanally I'm a big fan of London Midland's livery, it suits anything and suits both rival products the Desiro and Turbostar (if it suits a Turbostar especially 172 it'd going to suit an Electrostar), you can't really go wrong with grey and green.

I agree, the LM livery suits anything pretty much that it's put on. The new variant of the livery on the 150s has in my opinion made them look far younger than they are.

It looks alright, but I would like to see a 156 in EMT's express livery, I mean it looks good on the 158's after all

Oh, yes, I'd forgotten that one - it's a very clean livery and certainly pleasing to the eye.

EMT's 153s and 156s don't seem to be kept nearly as clean as the same operator's 158s, so I think that the white livery applied to the other Sprinter classes would show up the dirt something chronic. In my opinion it is only the scruffy look of EMT's 153s and 156s that makes them look "dated".

An I missing something?? They look red and cream to me
Yes, there have been two variants of the West Yorkshire PTE red & cream livery: The original livery applied to the class 155s and 144s from new featured a wider cream band and a few other detail differences such as the thin yellow stripe, compared to the later variant that was introduced in Regional Railways days.

This is the green and cream I think he was referring to

Also something from last nights conversation:

Yea I know! Thought that was quite a nice livery tbh.

It's just that the links in the post show red and cream liveried units, nor can I find any reference to 155/144 units being painted in the green and cream livery?

Nope, you’re quite right, the 155s and 144s never received the green and buttermilk livery that originally adorned the 141s. 61563 HTAFC’s post never suggests that they did. It states that the 141s were the exception in terms of their early finish.

Maybe I did sacrifice clarity for the sake of brevity a little! The 158s never recieved the later version with the narrow cream stripe- A couple of the 158/9s (and most of the 144s) recieved the later Northern Spirit/WYPTE livery with the silver circles on red background, but most retained the 'rasperry ripple' until they went Northern blue. 141s were outshopped post-refurb in the earlier red & cream but were withdrawn before the revised version came in. 308s only recieved the revised version when transferred North. All the Leeds-Doncaster 307s had the original red & cream Metro colours applied except one which stayed in NSE.

(I might have missed one or two details there- I'm sure someone will correct me in that case!).

You will find that all of the class 144s and all ten of the WYPTE 158/9s received the red and silver “circles” livery. It was only the class 155s that lingered on in the Regional Railways variant of the WYPTE red/cream livery right up until they received Northern livery.

Also, the red and silver “circles” livery was introduced by Arriva Trains Northern, not Northern Spirit: Northern Spirit tentatively dabbled in a new livery for WYPTE sponsored services when they repainted one class 158 unit, 158909, in a red and grey version of the standard “Big N” scheme, but beyond this, they were content to leave the WYPTE liveried units as they were, given that the Regional Railways revised WYPTE red/cream scheme had only been relatively recently applied. The exception to this was the class 333s, which were delivered new in the "Big N" WYPTE livery.

The class 144s had the red and silver “circles” livery applied as part of their refurbishment that saw them fitted with the same high-backed Richmond seating design fitted at an earlier date to the Northern Spirit 156s. The centre cars of the 3-car units were actually refurbished at a different time to the driving vehicles in some cases, giving rise to “pie-bald” formations in service that were part red and silver, part red and cream.

The class 141s were not quite withdrawn before the revised WYPTE red/cream livery was introduced, but you are right in saying that they never received that variant of the livery.

I always liked the London & South East sector 'Express' colours, better known as 'Jaffa Cake' livery.

421_Jaffa

Class 421 '4-CIG' - Were quickly repainted into NSE livery

Class 309 'Essex Express'

Class 411 '4-CEP'

Of course the 'Jaffa Cake' colours were quickly superseded by NSE red, white and blue. I recall reading somewhere that London & South East planned to introduce inner and outer subirban liveries using blues and greens to complement the 'express' brown/orange livery. Interestingly, found this on fliker that shows a Class 317/1 drawn in 'Jaffa Cake' colours.

Oh I hate myself for putting that pacer there :'( I love pacers and sprinters and I wasnt thinking when I put it up, I will try and redeem myself with a FNW Class and later a WYPTE class 155... :D Any requests?
I'll push the boat out! -
Original Provincial Blue Class 150/1
Network NorthWest Class 150/2
Merseyrail Class 150/2
Strathclyde PTE Class 156
