How can I pay in Lisbon? For the metro, can I just tap in and out using my credit card? Is it the same for buses and trams? I'm seeing a lot of outdated and contradicting information online so I'd like some clarification.

The Viva Viagem card (now called Navegante) IIRC costs 50c and works much like Oyster.

When I went a few years ago, the trains that ran over the Tagus had a different system to the trains elsewhere and I had the pleasure of being marched to a ticket office to buy a correct ticket. I hope it is simpler now, but if not I am sure someone will be able to explain it better than me.

Also consider that there are day tickets on Navegante. If you plan to use the metro/trams/funiculars/trains a lot, the day ticket may be a cheaper option.

  • Carris/Metro: €6.80
    Unlimited travel on metro and Carris, including bus, tram, funicular and lift.
  • Carris/Metro/Transtejo: €9.80
    Unlimited travel on metro, Carris and ferry to Cacilhas (River Tejo connection).
  • Carris/Metro/CP: €10.80
    Unlimited travel on metro, Carris and suburban train (Sintra, Cascais, Azambuja and Sado lines).

You can use a bank card on the metro, for everything else you need a Navegante card. Transport is cheap but the fares are excessively complicated, they'd make Frankfurt blush, so I thought that day tickets are the way to go. I didn't see any day tickets that would be useful on the buses from the ferry terminal on the other side, or the tram there, annoying as the buses there are also Carris now, a big improvement over the old operator
